Suspect it was getting power but with massive resistance from the dirty connection. Are they are standard microswitch? If so Maplins used to keep them (used them on an Aprilia AF1).

All I can suggest is cleaning all the connectors between them, just in case a dirty connector cannot cope with the current draw.

I suspect it is a carbon cannister, to absorb fuel fumes.

I would love a source of the reserve switches. I did manage to find them, but only a trade supplier selling in bulk.
