so, as suggested, I ran a temporary earth straight from the battery earth terminal,so.......................

and connected it direct to the tail lamp unit. Test ...

offset pins so only fits one way.

Bad earth!

but the earth to the bulb holder is OK for the tail lamp to function OK - it earth's to the bulb body - so the stop lamp should work too.

No earth to the brake light circuit

Isn't it earthed at the bulb?

Only a live in / live out on the front and rear brake switches.
