That might not be true ...

Technically you want cold air / fuel mixture because it's denser so you get more in. Then you want it come into a hot engine because the expansion gives you added compression. You don't want to run an engine "cold" but then again you don't want it to overheat .... you need it at optimum, where ever that is.

...And the Bimota designers are way, way ahead of all the other bike designers because they know that all you need to keep the engine at the optimum temperature is...wait for it...a gym mat Laughing

To be fair, I'm not sure our gym mat contributes anything to engine temperature it is water cooled after all and the temperature is controlled by the (cough) thermostat but I certainly think it contributes to things like alternator (over)temperature Wink

I think the mat frying the alternator coupler is a myth. The coupler on my 6r went and there's never been any rubber mats in there. I think the coupler goes when there's not enough juice in your battery to spin the starter and hence the starter clutch (on which said coupler is mounted) cleanly, for want of a better expression.

Yeah Yeah....whatever Laughing

Thinking about the gym mat, frying alternator couplings........

Suzuki San thought to modify said coupling towards the end of GSXR1100 production.
The original part number is superseded by the new part number.
Because of that fact, I'm going to surmise that Suzuki San wasn't that concerned about Bimota's and did the mod because GSXR's were failing. Now, GSXR's weren't wrapped up in gym mat like SB6's but still failed Shocked
So the gym mat is not to blame??
...Still, I think it looks like wrapping/packing when they crated the bike ( Laughing ) and forgot to remove it when they un-crated the bike.
It offends me...therefore...it's fired Laughing

Had another look at my bike today Smile and the air box with the mat Rolling Eyes
Thinking of removing the mat now and covering the underside of the air box with the left over heat reflective foil from doing under the seat and tail Question
My mechanic is pretty keen to keep it (airbox) and the carb's as cool as possible Cool
So I think it might be worth trying,
Did I mention it's getting warmer here Very Happy
Low 20's and it's only going to heat up. Laughing
