Should a Black/Red wire in one of the main connector blocks by the radiator show 1.5 volts when the ignition is on? My feeling was this was not right, so I have spent the past couple of evenings disconnecting all the connectors and components on the harness. This wire is the feed for the Oil Level Indicator Light.

The conclusion at the moment is that when the ignition + kill switch are on this passes 12.5 volts to the Main Relay and the Main Relay is then passing 1.5 volts out on the Black /Red wire. I have swapped the Main Relay, so either I have two dud Main Relays, or this low voltage is meant to happen.

The Main Relays tested out okay as per the Workshop Manual so maybe this low voltage is meant to be, but it does not feel right.

Can anyone give clarity on this?

Use a Yamaha FZR600 3HE manual for this ... but I'd say when the ingition is turned on and the engine isn't running then the red dash light is an ignition warning light, it's only when the engine runs (or the starter turns) that it's an oil light.

Good point about the light being on as an ignition light. So I need to test with the engine running.

Sometimes you get too close to a problem to see the context. Thanks for the clarity.

once the switch is active (i.e sees oil pressure) it then goes off.......

most ignition/warning lights work the same

Hi

Most Yamahas use an oil level light rather than an oil pressure light. My FZR600 certainly does.

It seems to be wired to emulate a pressure light by illuminating when the engine isn't running. Just a convenient way to know the bulb still works really

All the best

Keith

Worked out the problem - the rectifier had gone and was causing all sorts of fun. Got a feeling that is why the dashboard is fried (see earlier post).

Bit of luck though - have implemented a recommended mod (http://fzronline.com/wiki/doku.php?id=r6_voltage_regulator_conversion) of using a later YZF600 unit (cheaper and better heat sink) and was expecting to have to make a mounting plate but there was a screw hole in the frame near where the old rectifier was that seemed to be made for mounting this newer unit.

Electrics are running fine now - just got the dash board issue, which is a real shame.

Glad you got it sorted. Good luck with the dash issue

Is it a bimota dash or a dash donated from another bike? Maybe cheaper and easier to find a second hand dash if it's a common one.

It is the Bimota dash. By today's standards it is primitive, but in 1990 it was quite unique and ahead of its time.

But you are right, the fall back is to fit a modern digital dash in its place. Koso seem to do good range http://www.digital-speedos.co.uk/koso-multi-function-gauges-1-c.asp ; The Rx2n is used on modern Bimotas.

Just a shame that the original dash wasn't a bit more robust then. Would be nice to keep the original dash on the bike. Maybe a good instrument technician can help you... which brings us to your original question in the other thread... Anyone know of one? Very Happy
