Ducati tells us to change out the timing belts every 2 years regardless of mileage. My bike was built on 07/07, and as far as I could determine the belts had never been done, until today. Bimota did a good job hiding one of the screws on the verticle belt cover butt I managed to sneak in and get it out, everything else was pretty easy. There are vids on YouTube that cover most of the tricks, and it actually runs after the job! _________________ Spike C.

Always a contentious point of discussion with Ducati Cam belts......dealers always say 2 dyears, regardless of the engine..until you get to know the mechanics etc....If a high stressed engine, 1098's etc, 4 valve twin cams...then yeh...2 years....but as you prove yourself....2 valve single cam engines...I push to 4 or 5 as long as mileage isnt too high inbetween, and the bike has been regularly run so as not to leave the cam belts in the same position.
Used to be an issue many years ago, but the belts now have reinforcing kevlar strands in them that stops the frequent snapping on older bikes..some people on here push over ten years on belts...and dont seem to have had an issue....
At least with the 2 valve single cam engines the belts are cheaper also... |

Tend to run mine to 4 years old, check them beginning, middle and end of season or at about 2000 miles ish. I've seen belts on machinery take massive abuse and neglect for years of service (they may run slower but at higher loading), check for cracks or any fraying, sprocket alignment and tensioner rollers. The rear cylinder is a bit of a pig to change on a DB4 though. Good vids, should have thought of that . |

I'm guilty as charged. My db4 has over 22000 k's on it and i don't know for sure when the belts were done. The bloke i bought it off said they were done but doesn't know when. One of those jobs i've been planning on doing. I did pop the covers off and had a look and they looked to be in good nick. _________________ '99 DB4 #104, '96 SB6 #1165, '94 DB2 J #652, '99 DB4 #088, '08 VTX1800, '93 ZXR750R M1, '95 ZXR750, '95 ZXR750 Race Bike, '94 CBR400rr NC29 Race Bike, '94 CB250, '49 BSA C10 250, '61 BSA A10 650, '89 ZXR750, '91 Ducati 851 |

Was also Guilty as Charged....DB4 had 28,000 Kms when I bought it...done a couple of K since and they were changed this year...belts were reckoned to be Originals with Non-kevlar reinforcement.....So not an issue apparently...Oops.... |

So your belts were only, what, 12 or 13 years old? With around 18000 miles on them? And no Kevlar? _________________ Spike C.
