Frame sorted and recoated. Couple of damaged threads repaired and new bearings fitted Smile The frames a work of art - proper Bimota!

Hy Nigel,

Whoow, you don't stop restoring these bikes, that's clear!
Nice frame and idem paint job.
Assume also powdercoated?
How did you remove the old layers?
Sandblasted?

Any before pics?
Did it have ball bearing in the headstock or tappered roller bearings?

What's your planning?

Good luck and will see how it progresses.

Ciao,

Frank

Nice! Bimota's frames are certainly different to your run of the mill twin cradle frame.

Cool... looking forward to this build thread too. I didn't realize that these old bims had adjustable swingarm pivot, very nice.

Frank, the headstock has taper roller bearings as per modern bikes. I use a local powder coater, he uses vapour, baking and occasionally beadblasting to clean the frame up. He also tidies up any small scuff marks so it gets the great finish.
Hi Brian, yes it seems to adjust everywhere - even a different attachment point for the rear suspension onto the swingarm
Its a real piece of metalwork for sure.
The rebuild is fairly simple as it was pretty good to start with - all the correct parts/plates except brake lever. The only fly in the ointment is the electrics which tuck right up against the engine and need redoing as the have hardened and split really badly - what a tedious job Sad

Nigel,

For me the only part (area) where Bimota left room for improvement from day one: electrics/wiring. Smile
Will keep watching you and Waggy how you are going to tackle this on your bikes.

I myself plan (!) to make an alternative wire loom but still looking for the correct hardware (AMP-Superseal 1.5: nice but can't find more than 6 pins connectors) and multicolour super flexible wire.

Well I do have some time so hopefully I see a nice example of what is possible!

Really love the "old" Bimota frames with the eccentric adjusters.
Nice to see the evolution (later the KB2 had the heavily braced headstock but with the concentric rear fork etc.).

Great to see such beautiful welded tubes (just wonder what that did cost in those days).

Frank

Hello Frank,

have you tied the Farnell catalogue? - they seems to have lots of odd stuff on there?

Cheers, MikeJ
