Hi guys.I recently purchased a 2000 sb6r with 1500 miles on her.Very little use in last 5yrs.I changed battery, cleaned carbs etc, changed tyres and headed out very excited.Too many years ago I owned an ex-factory yb4e1 that was raced by Yam on the Island in 1989.I had a 1996 rc45 at the time and the Yb was a gem compared to the Honda.Work her hard and she rewarded the effort. With that in mind I set off and started a 50 mile relationship beginner ride.1st impressions-wow-she's short, wide, powerful even by today's standards and a bit eager to run wide until you let her go a bit. After 30miles engine cut out,new battery almost completely flat.I swapped batteries with a mate on a sv650(same battery !!) and headed home.On arrival that battery was almost fully discharged as well. Can anyone lead me to the reg/rectifier as I cleaned carbs in situ ( fairing on ),itching to get her running and didn't have a look about. Are there any known issues with the generator? .Many thanks in advance for any help. |

Welcome to the forum mate.
I haven't experience it myself, but I've seen a couple threads on here about the alternator drive coupling failing. An engine out job to replace unfortunately. Although I do recall a thread where somebody managed to replace it with the engine in the frame. _________________ '99 DB4 #104, '96 SB6 #1165, '94 DB2 J #652, '99 DB4 #088, '08 VTX1800, '93 ZXR750R M1, '95 ZXR750, '95 ZXR750 Race Bike, '94 CBR400rr NC29 Race Bike, '94 CB250, '49 BSA C10 250, '61 BSA A10 650, '89 ZXR750, '91 Ducati 851 |

Whilst 1500 miles is early days for anything to have given up, I'm with Brian, it is most likely to be the generator coupler which has a rubber bush bonded into it, which can be torn if somebody has been starting the bike with a partially discharged battery. The engine does have to be pivoted down on the upper mountings to get the starter clutch cover off to gain access to the shaft that the coupler sits on. But that is no bad thing as it will allow you to throw the original drive chain in the bin, which is where it belongs. Don't be tempted to try and replace the coupler without pivoting the motor to get at the starter clutch assembly, as the labour involved is no less than pivoting the motor and there's a good chance you're going to butcher something in the process. Parts are about £150 as you have to replace a bearing aswell as the coupler, which is damaged as you remove it to get the coupler off. You'll need access to a hydraulic press to push the new bearing and coupler on to the starter clutch shaft. It's a pain, but the bike is more than worth the effort. In the handling department, she needs some lighter wheels to really show what she can do. Good luck! _________________ What, Jonny's gone! |

While you're down there luv ... erm sorry force of habit - have a look at the front sprocket cover. If it's been cut with a 90 deg internal corner it could be a weak spot, make sure there isn't any metal fatigue at that corner.
You might want to fill the oil through the engine breather on top of the cam cover.
