A few weeks ago I checked the valve tolerances in my engine and due to a series of unfortunate occurrences the head of the vertical exhaust valve came off and punched a hole in the piston. After thinking about my options I found a 2007 Multistrada engine on eBay that had 2 hundred fewer miles than the one that I had, and I bought it. A little over a week later I had it in my garage and after checking the clearances and replacing the belts installed it into my bike. One of my friends is an old Ducati mechanic (not "tech") who was dubious about sensors being compatible, but they all plugged into their proper places and the engine fired right up like it had been there all along.
After sealing hole in the air boxes the engine runs better than it has since I have owned it.
It was quite a leap of faith to buy something has major as a Ducati engine sight unseen through the internet. I am pleased to report that at least in this case, it is possible to do this with great results!

well done spike, I;m glad to hear it worked out for the best. I've thought about buying a 1198 engine and putting that in my bike as not sold on the newer DB8 model thats same as mine, little changes they have made don't do it for me and the cost of upgrading is quite a lot as well.

did you consider any other engines before you bought the current one?

No, I just wanted plug and play! There was a Hypermotard engine available, but I like the way the wet clutch works.

Keep the original engine cases. To a collector, that will increase its value.

No worries, I am keeping the whole engine and plan to rebuild it.
