I second that.....nice man on here with the DB5 Mille with silver tank and red bodywork has an early model with ally tank....lovely to look at when you realise its formed in ally....filler welds at bottom edges a little raggy, but thats all....fairly normal for Bimota with the early models to make ally tanks until enough of a production run makes it worthwhile to go for a production run of plastic ones....Its possible that the race boys have ally tanks or suppliers, but I dont know any |

I do not really trust plastic tanks, the track record for them on Ducatis is pretty bad. I don't know if the Bimota ones use the same material, butt I did see an Acerbis logo on a piece of material somewhere else on the bike so I have my suspicions!
The other issue is that I am just a bit offended by the presence of a big chunk of plastic on this beautifully crafted piece of machinery! If Ducati can put an alloy tank on the Panigale, why not have one on a DB5R? _________________ Spike C.

Yeh I see what you're saying Spike....and whilst I'd like to think the ethanol in US was the problem...I know that some Ducati tanks have had the swelling and warping issue over in the UK also...so issues with fules here also...lots of folk say a spray lining can be used, or use different gas or an additive, but nothing thats been proven over time....I have Bimotas with plastic tanks going back to 1994 with no issue, but evidently fuels have changed also...so will be keeping my fingers crossed for one... |

I know in Bimota use or used ally tank for prototype, and perhaps some serial first models.
I know, here in Italy some customizer (for race use) used ally tank.
Some months ago I saw one (used) sold for 400-500€
I don't know if the have one, but perhaps they know where you can buy, try to contact these:

Yep,
on my early DB5 Mille is original aluminium tank... It is very very light (don't know how much plastics one weights), but it is very complicated thing to make and not two are exactly the same. I have another one, but it is reserved for second colour scheme for my DB5. Motoatelier had one at the beginning of the year. _________________ Bimota DB7, Bimota DB5 Mille, Ducati 916, Ducati M900, Benelli Tornado Tre |

well now, it seems that i need a new fuel tank for my DB5R! Bob at BimotaSpirit has told me that they are available, but now I REALLY want an ally one as the insurance company is paying for (most of) it!
Does anyone have any more ideas? I tried looking up Moto Atelier but there are a lot of companies with that for a name it seems. And I don't speak or read Italian or German. I regret not taking those classes in high school now! _________________ Spike C.

So if this works out and I get an alloy tank, do I have to paint it red? _________________ Spike C.
