I have a DB1 that I am considering placing on conditional historic registration which will reduce the cost of registration/insurance to a 10th of full registration. The vehicle needs to be 30 years old to qualify. My DB1 is number 406 so its fairly late in the production run. It was later converted by the dealer to S specs with 41mm Malossi carbs and a Conti system.
The compliance plate states the bike was manufactured in 1988 but I believe the plate was affixed to the bike when it was first sold, not when it was manufactured. The original sales papers show the bike was not sold until 1988.
Various websites show the standard DB1 being manufactured in 1985 and 1986 with later up-rated models being manufactured as late as 1988. Does anyone have a reliable source that I could use to accurately date my DB1?

www.urbanmotoimports.com.au

were very helpful when I was trying to find the manufacturing date of my YB8 for importing into Australia. They contacted the Bimota factory and got the date for me.

tricky one...as always with Bimotas....and worldwide circulation of them....Not all models...be it DB1 or other...had or needed frame plates...always stamped on the headstock...but plates were normally added to show compliance depending on the country being shipped to.......History book of Bimotas shows 453 bikes of DB1's made between 85-86.....Db1S...63 No. between 86-87...and 153 No. DB1SR's between 87-89

DB1 frame numbers supposed to be 00.001 to 00.476
DB1S 00.477 to 00.538
DB1SR 00.539 to 00.782
Mine is frame no 196 and first registered from new in the UK 1.05.1986....evidently made before this date and then shipped to the Uk...

But when you look at the Swiss register you clearly see some frame numbers way out of sink....High frame nos in the DB1 series and vice versa

Never is there a definitive answer to these questions

The bike was first shown at the Milan Motor Show in 1985....so all others date from there is all that could be said for certain
