|
|
Failed MOT as always with leaking seals. This year no one could get fork seals for me YB11, not riders, Woods or NLM. Bimota Italy claimed they did not do them anymore, (well who wants to wait anyway).
Found a solution - at least 2 get me through the MOT. Check this out.
51mm inner = nearly 2 inches (50.8mm). 63mm outer is nearly 2.5 inches.
Are you with me yet?
Yep - bizarre as it might sound an imperial fork seal should just about (tight fit outer diameter and inner) fit a YB11.
So if you get a 2x2.5x0.25 imperial seal (standard size) it will fit.
These guys www.simplybearings.co.uk do that size fork seal.
Anyway the YB has passed the MOT. Lets see how long it lasts. If it lasts longer than the YB11 standard seal (about 5k miles) we are getting somewhere.
Did Paoili purposely chose this imperial seal ??? If so why not tell the world about it instead of quoting bizarre metric dimensions?

They are a very wierd metric size.

I was thinking the same thing a few days ago. I have a bilstein strut body with a weird thread which is as far as I can tell M51 x 1.0. Now Bilstein is German but i was thinking along the lines of it's very close to 2.0". Similarly so is the YB11 seal. . . . .
Let's see how long it lasts, my bike has done 3k from new and they weep very slightly _________________ 03 YB11, 03 Aprilia RSVR Edwards, 94 Ducati Superlight III, 95 Honda NC30, 04 Ducati 999S, 91 kawasaki KR1-S C2, 91 Ducati 851 USD Strada, 89 ZXR750H1, 90 ZXR400H1, 205 16v Rally Car, A6 2.7TDI Avant, STM R1 engined Phoenix |

Well , after messing around stripping forks , oil everywhere , discovered all you need to do , is leave the fork in one piece , release seal spring clip , and then gently tap gold seal carrier downwards. As forks are all seperate parts the carrier slides over the carbon sheath , and the seals just pop out. Can change seals in about 5 minutes flat. Another point is simply bearings have either sold out of the fork seal pairs , or got wise , only imperial seals of correct size I could find on there site were £12 each.
First seal I fitted was very tight and ended up leaking , found I had to make the outer diameter smaller so as no to crush the inner diameter to much. Only done a quick 10 miles so far , but all seems ok at present. |

how did you make the outer diameter smaller out of interest? _________________ 03 YB11, 03 Aprilia RSVR Edwards, 94 Ducati Superlight III, 95 Honda NC30, 04 Ducati 999S, 91 kawasaki KR1-S C2, 91 Ducati 851 USD Strada, 89 ZXR750H1, 90 ZXR400H1, 205 16v Rally Car, A6 2.7TDI Avant, STM R1 engined Phoenix |

Had a few large nylon washers , clamped seal between 2 , mounted in drill , and a few minutes later with some emery cloth , outer diameter down to 63.1mm . Seals I got were the redy brown viton ones. Forks had previously been re-sealed by a suspension company the previous owner had sent them to , think he had used an angle grinder to do a similar job , no wonder the seals failed after about 100yrds. |

Allegedly not, I've just read that Paoili commissioned KYB to make a batch of 51mm seals specifically for this 51mm fork leg
KYB are not making any more so if the factory ain't got any more.................good luck guys |

Courtesy of BimotaNige and a few others.
I have just bought a YB11 and it came with printouts for the RSU51's A parts catalogue for the entire bike and part of the manual. I have since ontained the balance of the manual and put all on Google docs to share.
The folders hold individual JPG files for each page and the Main combined PDF's are in the opening folder.
Hope this helps all.
