The oil light on the cluster is supposed to go on when the key is in the ON position, which mine doesn't. Not sure if it's the bulb or the sender unit. its very difficult to get to the wiring with the tester without removing the front fairing. Are the idiot lights plugged in into the back of the cluster? What's the best way to access them?

It might be easier to access the oil pressure switch and test it first?

I'm not familiar with Yamahas, but it should be just screwed into the engine block somewhere. Maybe down near the oil pump. It will just be a round switch that screws into an oil gallery, usually only has a single wire.

The bulb lights in the crank position.
Check the bulb

The level sensor operates so that it has continuity to ground when your level is good and no continuity when it is low.

Depending on your model you will have one of two types of oil light relay, these make the light work in such a way when you disconnect the sensor it should light up the bulb as a fail safe mechanism.

I had a relay fail but the bulb still lit up when cranked, so sounds like a bulb issue for you. The bulb takes its power from the instrument cluster so would be unusual for it to lose the +12V. And the cranking ground comes from the diode/relay block which us fairly reliable.

What's the easiest way of accessing the bulb? I see the screws on the back of the cluster that apparently hold the retainer for the light panel section. Am I able to remove just the individual plug at the back of the cluster?

It can't be too advanced, bulbs made to be changed. I'm running ZXR400 bulb cluster so can't advise but i'm sure you will work it out, Heck there are much harder maintenance tasks to be done with the Bike. Your gonna struggle with sparkplug replacement! Smile
