Hi
Has anyone done this at all?
What do you think the benefits of this conversion would be?
Interestingly the Santa Monica has overhead showers. Has anyone ridden both and what are the differences between the two? |

Thanks for the intro Brian!! I feel very special now
999 injectors , have not done it myself but know another that has done it on a SB8K and says its a worth while mod.
It is on my list of things to do , but Mrs Vort's TO_DO list is way above mine !!!!!
Never ridden an R but K has smaller throttles and the overhead adjustable injectors. R is mean't to have lots of top end but little low down and fluffy fuelling in the midrange due to 59mm throttles , K has smoother curve and about 10bhp more I think top end.
Video link just for Brian as I know he likes watching it.

Yes a very good link and I did enjoy watching.
However onto the practical side.
I have read on the TL zone that a few people have sucess fully done this conversion and it increases bhp by 5. But and this is a big but for me, produces this at the top of the Rev range. What I am after is moving the torque down the Rev range to improve tractability.
Therefore I assume this conversion will not help me, and I need to look at cams.
Unless anyone else knows any different? |

Low down power is usually a smaller carb obviously on an injection bike you don't do that. I think what you need is to change the air velocity into the system by changing the trumpet length. Lots of engines have a variable length system using a servo to operate them _________________ Don't read everything you believe |

As EC says midrange is down to throttle body size.
I think from memory the TL is 52mm as standard , SB8R is 59mm and SB8K is 54/55mm.
So NO , I dont think this mod would give you more midrange, I would expect that the reason the SB8K has the over throttle system is to get the top end of the SB8R but the 54/55mm throttles give it the best low down/midrange grunt.( seem to remember the performance bike TL they did recently had the throttles bored out to 54mm, with a 1040CC kit, but I may be wrong)
The TL over throttle injectors probably do give them more top end , but the the 52mm throttles already give them plenty of grunt. |

sb8rs, The cam timing on our bikes leave something REALLY BIG to be desired! I would first correct the cams to center lines around the 104Inl/108Ex range for better bottom end grunt and retune. As far as installing the 999 shower injectors, they would definitely help with the atomization, but you would need to change the injector phase and injector battery offset tables also. The stock Weber injectors have a pencil stream, where the 999's have a 15 degree cone shape. I've got some twelve hole injectors I'm going try on mine sometime soon.
Vort28, Your number on the throttle bodies sounds right to me. I don't know if you have ever checked this, but the butterfly valve is the same for both the SB8R and SB8K. They just change the angle after the butterfly valve to be smaller in diameter. I can tell you from having both throttle bodies mounted on a head on the flow bench,(I flow at 28"), you do not need to rotate the throttle valve 90 degrees for maximum flow, 80 degrees is all you need. _________________ Bimota SB8R

Finally took the SB8rs out today after some 3+ years of storage (far too many bikes).
I had forgotten just how good this bike actually is.
Of course I have made "adjustments" to her, she is a Bimota after all; so it was always going to be an ongoing development (as is with all Bimota's).
Yes she does not like towns, but once out onto the open roads she performed very well indeed and got may admiring glances and most importantly made me feel good riding her.
Needless to say I will be using her a lot more this summer and will definitely not be putting her back into storage for a while yet.
Overhead showers - who needs them when she goes so well. |
