Hi, as a new member of the forum I would like to introduce myself and seek a little advise if possible ?
I am 64 and retired, live in the uk in the winter and Crete in the summer, and just about to embark on a return to biking after a ten year break, I have just bought a YB11 with a few minor issues, I intend to strip it down over the winter and fix them as and when they arise, give the bits you don't see a good clean and get it back on the road in the Spring.
The one glaring problem is a crack in the wheel spindle mounting on one of the front fork legs, vertically downwards from the centre of the shaft, I suspect if I took the two pinch bolts out the broken piece would come away with them.
Any help with a solution would be much appreciated, is it a weak point on these forks ? Could it be weld repaired ? Is there a uk specialist who is likely to be able to help ? Where would I source a new or second hand replacement, can I just replace the one leg that's damaged ?
Sorry for being a bit dense but I have worked on a lot of cars but never bikes, I bought them new and then part ex' for another one, only ever needed routine servicing hence this time around I went for a classic based on the thunderace I had and really enjoyed in the mid nineties !
I have a picture if you wish / need to see it please email me on
Stevemartin911@aol.com
Thanks, I look forward to taking part in the forum.
Have a good bike riding week end.

Hi Steve...and welcome to the wonderful world of Bimota ownership...if you can email a picture to I'll post up a picture for others to try and help....not seen a cracked paioli fork bottom before...sounds like over tightening of thevpinch bolts....roy54 on here had a YB11...UK based...and he changed his forks for upgraded forks....so he may still have his standard 51mm forks for sale...

Fork lower spindle mount can crack through over tightening of pinch bolts.
Finding replacement may be difficult but due to the seal issue, no longer available, people have been replacing forks for others, so maybe some languishing in garages.
Welding is an option and a good weld would be as strong as original, just have to get both refinished to match.
Other option is sb6 lower, this will fit, maybe easier to find but will change wheel base due to spindle being under rather than in front of fork. 46 and 51mm forks use same lower fork leg just different internals. |

Thanks for your input guys, yes the crack is almost identical to the one shown in the picture from the German guy, have emailed him for a cost. Not really looking to spend a lot of money on an upgrade, I suspect my style of riding won't allow me to benefit from the improvement !
Also looking for the pad that fits on fairing that replaces the passenger seat cover, won't be taking any pillions anywhere.
I got a couple of spares with the bike, both saddles but a bit more interesting a whole top fairing from steering yoke, over the tank, contains the saddles and carries on to the tail light, not perfect condition but more likely storage / shipping damage, unless the bike was owned by a complete moron.
Any interest to anyone on here, I am not planning on keeping them, if I throw it down the road then my biking days will definitely be over one way or another !
Regards Steve |
