Yes and No really.....It being a Ducati....Dem dare Ducati boys are real picky on "originality"....and this is really just a standard 900SS...with a superlight replica seat unit....Yes...it does have some nice extras, big bore kit, wheels, suspension brake upgrades...but...its still just a 900SS at the end of the day...I always think that extras and worthwhile changes to a classic are a real "nice to have"...but wouldn't pay the extra that it cost to make the changes
It looks nice enough...but I do question a couple of issues....I wouldn't trust the drilling/weight saving on that rear disc...and on the right front brake caliper he has 2 braided hoses entering the caliper...other side has the usual one hose and one bleed nipple...but 2 hoses on one caliper????? I can only imagine he has one line running to RHS caliper and second line then flows from this one to the LHS caliper....Wouldn't want to ride a bike like that where one caliper is bighting earlier than the other...or loosing bite as it feeds the other caliper? Has anyone ever seen a set-up like this before?
Auction buying must be a real lottery....if not actually there and able to view everything in detail...take that Gilera Supermono that sold for £10K...a lovely bike but look at the pictures and it differs from picture to picture...bar ends changing in 3 shots etc etc...evidently the seller provided an archive of photos...so what you actually end up with is a bit of a lottery |

I agree 2Bims - it doesn't get much better than that Gilera Piuma. And it was the last one ever made (of only 23!!) AND it was Alan Cathcart's. We have a slightly tweaked Gilera Saturno (essentially same engine) - and it's brilliant. Handles like it's DB1 big brother - in fact similar in ethos really.
Funny how these auctions tend to favour the fashionable stuff. To think how much a 750 Sport Bevel fetches now - when there are 'sleepers' like this Gilera that go under the radar - which are often the gems in my opinion. Fashionable old scene this. _________________ DB1 . Ducati F1 . Ducati TT2 . Ducati 450D . Guzzi LM1 . Morini Kanguro |

Did bimota sell frame rails to Gilera? They look identical? |

I read a quite complete write up on BimotaClassicParts facebook page....that someone posted up...as BCP have just taken a NOS one of those Gileras in.....evidently the designer of the bike was Martini who was at BImota in the YB series era...and then went to Gilera...apparently those frame rails are an "off the shelf" form and pattern of extruded ally.....and evidently look the same as Bimota used
More here on the bike....loosely translated..
The only thing that this bike share with 125 of production (Sp01 And Sp02) are the superstructures, made in fiberglass from the plastic bike (thanks... Ivo Odasso!!!) on moulds derived from those prototipali of for 125. The rest everything was made from specially... Aluminium Frame made from verlicchi and that he used a profiled in specially make aluminium extrusion and mergers in earth specially made, at wheels in magnesium marvic, to the container in aluminium (made using the Moulds of 125 for the upper part) to the swingarm using profiles and printed of RC from off-road vehicles (with, of course, of the specific measures). Everything was seasoned with brembo braking system Series Gold (the same used at that time in GP) and suspension marzocchi (these... to be honest.... not just of absolute level! ) but they had plates and triangles obtained from the full; even the pallets and media platform were completely obtained from the full!
The engine, of course, followed by RC from off-road vehicles... but he too was specific: the head was derived from that of the twin cam Saturn for power using a monocarburatore twice in the place of the body and the carburetor was a dellorto from 40 (the Largest available! ), alesato to 41,5. the valves and the cams were dedicated, as well as the return, who had 3 relationships built to have a close spacing; even the piston was dedicated, to ensure the greatest show that the cams provided dedicated .
The radiator was also specific.. and it was one of the first radiators that were engraved on machines not from GP.
Unloading was a trombone empty hand-made by the brothers frigerio... as well as many other plates and platelets... all done by hand and adapted one by one
Was kept the electric starter, but it was equipped with a specific connector (used at the time on the f3) to connect to an external battery pack..... because of the compression ratio to put it in motion to push a operation was practically impossible!
If we consider all that was there and everything that was the cost to call it.... the cost to whom was sold this bike (at the time of the old lire... it was the beautiful figure of 18 million! ) needed just to cover the costs incurred and the cost of materials; but the production of this motion was not determined when you do the math on the costs and profits... it was built, by a group of enthusiasts (before technicians) just to provide To the other fans a motorcycle immediately ready for the track. |

My first motorcycle was a gilera
Gfr125 sp, brings back good old memories! Fast enough to keep up with the cagiva mito and aprilia rs 125 back in the days. I still remember the power valve opening around 6500 revs _________________ Ducati 750 SS café racer, BMW R nine T Cafe Racer, Husqvarna Vitpilen, KTM Rc8, Husqvarna Vitpilen 701, Bimota DB6 |
