Hi Guys
Always love dining out on a can of worms!!
I am considering buying either a YB10 or an SB6. Here in sunny Brisbane we are fortunate to have one of each advertised for sale. Both bikes are in excellent condition. At the moment I am swaying towards the the YB10 because of the rarity here in Oz (never seen another for sale) and the reviews (I am reading the Brooklands review book at the moment) but I love the look of the SB6 (although it does look like my Laverda 750S a bit). Another fly in the ointment is I have a GSXR1100 and an FZR1000 and the GSXR is such a better bike IMHO. So that tips me towards the SB6 even though I know the Bims are nothing like there Japanese relatives. I'd be interested in all opinions and views.

Check out Motorcyclespecs.ze...its a website based in Washington DC that lists practically every motorbike ever made...but more usefully and "dodgily" cuts and pastes Motorbike Magazines test reviews within each post to give you opinions on how they ride

Have to say....I don't know anyone who has BOTH models....People were always either a Yamaha or a Suzuki man.....is the YB10 a twin seat? Is that something you'd need/use?....I've been a Kawasaki and a Yamaha man....and have never owned a Suzuki....although I was fortunate for my brother to lend me his RG500 Gamma....and a GSXR1100....but still never owned a Suzy....although have ridden a few....Kwacks and Yams and Bims and Ducs and KTM...Ridden Beemers but only owned ones with 4 wheels...Of course...there is a VERY simple answer to your conundrum..........

BUY BOTH....and then let us all know which you prefer...there is an "age gap of some 3-4 years between the models though if that makes a difference

I don't know the prices in Oz (other than dearer than most other countries)...but here in the UK and Europe...theres usually always £2-3000 price difference between the 2 models....with the Sb6 being the lesser of the 2....not a hard and fast rule for every case...but on "average"...maybe just coz they made so "many" SB6's compared to any other Bimota model...but still rare compared to other Marques

Hi

I have a Dieci, so probably a bit biased!

I have always liked the 5 valve Yamaha engines, and the YB4 / 6 were just out when I started riding bikes hence a fair bit of nostalgia there.

They both have their issues. SB6 is a nightmare to change the chain and sprockets on, and not easy to fill up the oil on. Dieci is easy enough for both of those, but a nightmare to get the carbs on and off.

The Dieci is set up quite stiff. Probably way too stiff for someone of my weight really and to be fair probably not as high quality suspension as the SB6.

But having one of each would be tempting!

G'day PK,

I'm in Mackay and own a SB6 and DB4. I don't know a lot about the YB10's, only what i've read etc. As 2bims says, there's a bit of an age gap between the 2 bikes but obviously both in their 20's anyway. Personally i prefer the looks of the SB6 and will always lean towards a single seater rather than a pillion seat bike, mainly because of the rego cost but also from an asthetic point. Happy to talk more about the SB6 if you want to know anything else... give me a call or shoot me a PM.

You would need an aweful FAT wallet to buy both of these bikes in Australia. I've looked at the listings for both of these bikes many times. The SB6 purchase price has dropped by over 5k since it was originally listed but is still 7k more than what i paid for mine

The engines have quite different characters. The FZR motor is turbine smooth, whereas the GSXR 11 motor feels more brutal, for want of a better expression. I love them both and I don't think you'll be disappointed with either. They both suffer from wear on the needle jets, which richens them up and takes the edge off them - so I would replace them on either bike where I wasn't sure of the provenance. Neither bike was made with ease of maintenance in mind. I would rather wrestle with the YB10s carbs than the SB6's engine sprocket, but then I'd rather take the rocker box cover off the 6 than the 10 and configuring the fuel lines on the 10 can be a nightmare. Having said all that, you would forgive either bike its foibles, as soon as you get it out on the road. So there you go, if you want my opinion, it's impossible to choose between them, so you'd better buy both!

Looks like you made a wise purchase there Brian.

I don't own a YB10 , but do own a YB11 and a SB6.
TBH engine wise they are very similar, big old 1000cc/1100cc lumps , good about of HP and loads of torque ,maybe slightly different deliveries but just role the throttle and they go. You can think about changing gear but not all that important . You can ride down a country lane in 3rd gear all day just rolling the throttle when required.

Chassis wise OK YB is a little more conventional in layout and accessibility but by no means is it as easy to work on as a 'normal ' bike , Bimota like to make things compact .
Ergonomics SB6 all the way for me, just seems to fit me, and that coming from a 6ft person wrapped around a very small sb6 package.

Looks !!!! Is there any competition ???? SB6 is just a fabulous looking bike with timeless styling .

But , its your choice and your money BUT ' a garage can not survive on 1 bimota alone ' Shocked BE WARNED !! Laughing

I still paid way more than what an SB6 would go for in the UK Stu. If i ever decide to sell it on it'll still be a struggle due to the very limited market in Aus.

PKay, there is another tri colour SB6 in Melbourne for sale for much less dollars. When the SB6 from Brisbane was advertised i posted it in a Australian Bimota Owners Facebook group we started last year... from what i could see in the images there was a fair bit of oxidisation on the frame which contradicted the description. If you are on Facebook, look the group up...

The Melbourne bike i think from Memory is advertised for $15,000... I'm happy to go have a look at it and provide images if you are interested...

I'm biased, i own a SB6 and think it is one of Bimota's best bikes.. ownership has it's challenges as have been pointed out, but how often do you need to change the front sprocket Smile

Did the YB10 use the Exup engine ... I know the 11 was ThunderAce.

I have a Six, there are a few things you can do to help them a bit but as said before it's a small bike that just fits. I put the clip-ons down 25mm to get closer to the tank / under the screen. Hit 90 ish the engine smooths out the exhaust noise is behind you ... it a great feeling

I'll take a look at that SB6 on Facebook - that's substantially under what the Brisbane dealer is asking for the other SB6. The YB10 is $19K AUD so call it 9.5k pounds.

FYI there is another YB7 for sale by a dealer for $10,500AUD too - have one of those so pass........
