but the earth to the bulb holder is OK for the tail lamp to function OK - it earth's to the bulb body - so the stop lamp should work too. _________________ Bimota SB6 and Benelli TNT 899S road bikes.

Electrics can be fickle things. Hard without looking at it. The symptoms in your original post point to bad earth to me. I'd double check the tail unit earth all the way back. Check all the connections and earth points on the frame etc too _________________ '99 DB4 #104, '96 SB6 #1165, '94 DB2 J #652, '99 DB4 #088, '08 VTX1800, '93 ZXR750R M1, '95 ZXR750, '95 ZXR750 Race Bike, '94 CBR400rr NC29 Race Bike, '94 CB250, '49 BSA C10 250, '61 BSA A10 650, '89 ZXR750, '91 Ducati 851 |

Is your head on the right way around???.....
But seriously...before you removed the loom and spliced and cut and remade...did either of the front or rear brake switches work? |

Hi
While the bulb holder only holds a bulb one one (well, without more force than advisable!), the spade connectors on the back can go on either way.
The brake light bulb draws ~4 times the current of the tail light bulb.
I would be tempted to run a supplementary earth to the rear light to see if that changes things.
As an aside, you are getting 11.36v at the tail light. What is the voltage over the battery?
All the best

That was going to be my second point, rig a temporary earth from the the bolt holding the rubber generator cover to the lamp and see how that affects things _________________ Don't read everything you believe |

Check that the wires going into the ignition switch have not been chafed. _________________ What, Jonny's gone! |

so, as suggested, I ran a temporary earth straight from the battery earth terminal,so.......................
and connected it direct to the tail lamp unit. Tested with side lamp wire - both filaments could be illuminated - tried with wire from brake switches - nothing - zilch.
I then connected another "jumper" wire to the live feed (red wire) to the rear brake switch and connected it to the stop lamp filament of the bulb, with the original (loom) earth wire attached, and it illuminated. So to me, the problem lies with the feed to the switches.
Next step is to jury-rig a live feed, direct from the battery, to the rear brake switch and see if that works.
All this for a bloody MOT - grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr _________________ Bimota SB6 and Benelli TNT 899S road bikes.

Sounds like you need a New MOT garage to get your bikes tested.....The most rigorous check I receive is whether I've brought biscuits to go with his coffee.....Although a functioning brake light is quite a nice "addition" to a motobike |

Cheer up - my Six has roughly the same problem except the rear indicators don't work either. At least you didn't blow the main fuse _________________ Don't read everything you believe |
