Busy working my way through the newly acquired YB10.

Are the front calipers Brembo P4 32/32 ?

Are service kits available ?

I have a problem with one of them in that the central pad retaining bolt (why a bolt and not a pin like all the others I've dealt with?) is absolutely stuck and resisting all removal strategies. I suspect someone previous had already had a bit of a go as the hex socket is on the way out...

Are newer P4 30/34s a straight swap if it comes to that?

Cheers
David

Hi

From memory they are stock Brembos

However worth checking with one of the Brembo specialists. They are borderline on age with Brembo supplying parts

All the best

For service items try : http://www.ducatipaddy.com

If you send him a pic of your troublesome caliper and the piston sizes he might be able to ID it.
Is the retaining bolt Allen headed or Torx head?

Good luck

KTM dealers can supply the Brembo caliper service kits that Brembo themselves won't supply. I bought a couple of kits for my Tesi calipers.

Thanks for the replies

It's an Allen head bolt that goes through the pads, which looking at the pics on Ducati Paddy's site seems specific for the P4 32/32. I'll get in touch with him as clearly he knows his Brembos.

Had a very prompt and helpful reply from DucatiPaddy which I thought I'd post here for future reference:

"Mixed news really, Brembo no longer supply spare parts in the UK, they simply say send the component back for rebuild which inevitably means its cheaper just to buy new.

The 32/32 is a bit of an odd ball as they were only fitted for a year and then replaced by the single pin 30/34 which are interchangeable.

If yours are not leaking they will strip down and rebuild using the original seals and pistons. The damage to seals is almost always due to chrome plated pistons rusting and tearing the seals. The 32/32 has alloy pistons , Teflon coated which usually last a life time so seals are almost always reusable.

If you get stuck there is a company called power house that advertise on e=bay that do the seal kits here

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ducati-851-89-91-Brembo-front-brake-caliper-seal-repair-kit-1989-1990-1991-/161127739180?hash=item2583f62f2c

I have heard very mixed reviews so be aware these are probably not Brembo seals.

I’m afraid the pad bolts are not available so you will just need to use a std M6 bolt of the same length, likewise with the pads you will have to use the std P4 30/34 single pin pads.

The good news is if you are not bothered about total originality I can supply brand new Brembo calipers in Gold or titanium that bolt straight on and were std fit from 1993 on ."

So confirms that we have the rather rare P4 32/32 as std fit on the YB10, with the 30/34 interchangeable. I'll carry on enjoying the sunny riding for the moment while I ponder next step...

Calipers rarely leak. I used to question the replacement of non-leaking seals until I replaced some just for good measure. The improvement in breaking feel was astounding.

The seals act as the spring to retract the pads after you apply the brake. Old seals go hard. New seals restore the springiness and feel. If rebuilding, I'd change seals if you can get them.

I'd imagine that also works the other way...fresher seals allow the pistons to move quicker and smoother than old stiff seals...more rapid response and better feel

I've fitted some nos calipers recently, while I get around to refurbishing the originals and I needed to strip them a few weeks in, as the pistons were not moving uniformly. I put some red grease on the seals and now they all respond to pressure at the lever, giving much smoother/stronger braking. Red grease seems to work better than brake fluid.
