Note to Brian - for cleaning metal tanks, don't use nuts/chains/etc inside the tank. Use a product called METAL RESCUE (Available at Home Depot in the US for $25 a gallon - you only need a gallon, although I had so many tanks to do I bought 5 gallons). Put it in the tank, and let it sit for 2 to 24 hours (depending on the level of rust) and drain (its resuable, so I also filter out the rust before I store it in a closed container for the next tank cleaning). Then rinse the tank multiple times with a small quantity of petrol (4 oz) to get all the residual METAL RESCUE out of the tank. I keep rinsing until I do not get any more METAL RESCUE out with the 4oz of petrol (it will not mix with petrol, as its heavier, so it separates out like water. I have used it in numerous steel tanks, and they turn out like new (literally) inside. Amazing stuff. _________________ 1978 Bimota SB2 00046

Thanks for the info mate. I’ll do some research and see if it’s available in Australia, or if there’s an alternative. For steel tanks it's hard to go past phosphoric acid for cleaning/treating rust - it leaves a nice layer of iron phosphate on the steel which helps prevent further corrosion. |

Gents, the beauty of METAL RESCUE is that is NOT an Acid. And therefore does NOT attack the base metal of the tank. Try it. You will be amazed. _________________ 1978 Bimota SB2 00046
