Hi, I have SB6#254 and it is getting an engine overhaul and I am in need of a head gasket... now the one sent from suzuki is for engine type U709 and my engine is, apparently, type U712 (numbers have been relayed to me via engine builder).
Does anyone have the correct Suzuki part number for the head gasket or indeed engine gasket set for this engine...suzuki NZ say it is an unusual engine and have no record of a type U712....which worries me somewhat!!

Can anyone shed any light onto the numbers and the differences or even better, a part number for the required head gasket?

many thanks

I doubt it's a TL1000 engine if it's in a SB6

I'm not sure about the 'U' numbers but the engine should be out of the GSXR1100 W model. A Suzuki dealer should be able to identify it.

This SB6R had a U712 engine number, so they do exist.

I reckon you're right Brian. The last GSXR1100 listed is the W. So it should be this head gasket:

So if I search online for GSX-R1100WR it gives me two options; GSX-R1100WR(E2)R and GSX-R1100WR(E28)R. are there any differences that would make one more likely than the other?

Headgasket is the same part number for all versions of watercooled GSXR1100. Part number is 11141-46E01
http://www.mickhone.com.au/part/suzuki/1114146E01#content

E2 and E28 were country codes - E2 is UK (Actually E02), E28 is Canada.
E02 and E39 (Austria) got restrictor plates between the head and the intake rubbers (100hp markets),
E18 (USA) and E39 got 36mm carbs (and hence different carb rubbers) and "secondary air" emissions junk
E22 (Germany) got a different carb rubber too, not sure why though - appear to be 40mm, but different jetting.

scratch that last question...apparently its differences not related directly to the engine.

OK - the engines for the SB6 were supplied by Suzuki who put on a different engine code (U712) but the engines are GSXR1100W … the MK1 Sb6 has the 1993 type and Mk 2 or later uses the later 95 type which has the extra frame mount to the rear of the engine head.

Very late Suzukis used a revised camshaft profile which was a "Yoshi" type. You can fit 750W cams to get a similar effect, the other cam lobes aren't centered on the cam buckets.

It's a good idea to check which cams are fitted to your engine - look for a letter stamped into one end - beware the C cams … they're restricted to 100bhp …. ask me how I know Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes that's how Bimota restricted these bikes
