I know there is a post re putting a zx12 can on the bike but whilst i wait for my bodywork to return..... does anyone know what fits the YB11 as it is very quiet and the down pipes and exup valve piece weighs a ton?

Or would it be easier to visit a pipe manufacturer and get one fabricated?

thanks in advance

Doug

I don't know for sure, but it looks like a pre-'98 YZF 1000 exhaust would work. The bend/length appear to be similar in pictures.

I have owned a few 5-valve Yamaha's. I recommend keeping the EXUP and just using the slip-on because of the engine's valve overlap. I have tried other syatems and I could never get the bike to run like I wanted. I could improve one end of the power band, but I always lost on the other end.

It should be easy enough to core the exhaust. You might even be able to buy a carbon sleeve for it, depending on the diameter.

This guy has different exhaust options. Reduction bushings to make mufflers fit different size pipes, custom mufflers, replacement carbon sleeves, etc.

As far as a can goes you just need to know the diameter and have a link pipe to suit. I reckon you'll find it's a fairly standard ThunderAce system so get a can to fit that and maybe fettle it as needed. Probably better to go for an oval or trioval so it doesn't touch the swingarm.

As far as a full system goes , I tried a nice 98-2001 Akropavic R1 system, all looked good in the pictures, assembled it, look good and weighed about 1/10th of the YB11 system, offered it up to the bike, bit of giggery pokery with the pipes, all bolts/studs located, jobs a good un. Spanners out , tighten the head studs, oh dear, before the headers clamp up the pipework hits the oil filter. Bollocks, such a nice looking system , and only
600 on sale. Akropavic do list but don't do the thunderace system any more, so its down to a one off system me thinks.

You could probably have the system moddified to fit, I guess it would be the two middle headers fouling the oil filter.

Thanks guys
I will go the modified can route first...

the front pipes weigh a ton (they were blasted clean, exup valve unstuck and repainted by the bike shop)

Mine uses a Two Brothers carbon race can off a ZX12R with a custom link pipe.
Only issue i had is with a pillion and the way the rear pegs are constructed they flex in a little when pillion loads them and during riding the rivet on the can gouged the swing arm a little.
So I got the pillion a bus pass, much cheaper. . . . ..

thanks for this
who made up the link pipe? as I will go this route

... I have re-insured my bikes with no pillion now so it should not be a problem.

EDITED
I believe these peolple did it, Zorstec, Unit 2, Commercial Mills, Wharf Street, Shipley BD17 7DW. 01274 587004 or 07870 406482 (Andy)
zorstec@aol.com .
You'd have to take the bike to them, so a local specialist fabricator should be able to do the work i would have thought
Phil

I think the later exup YB's ran OEM Yamaha exhausts, Yamaha probably wouldn't sell bimota their exup engines if they didn't use the valve. I think this is why the Tutara used the genesis black engine. These look like a nicely made system, it looks like a medium sized bore tube and 4-2-1, rather than 4 into 1, so you would expect a better spread of power.

DougK please can you post pix of the bike and the exhaust system as it sounds like a very interesting set up upgrades you have done.

How did you set up your open exhaust.

My YB8/exup setup ran fine with a fully open silencer, but it tended to run rich due to carb wear and tear. The YB11/Thunderace had some mods to prevent this I believe.

Cheers,
Zomb
