Seems the downside is the cold start properties...
Wouldn't start an SB6 at all this morning.
After the initial try where it seemed to totally struggle, I went through the alien "warm up" routine. It then turned over slightly faster but still not enough to fire it up.
I'll charge it up over night and give it another chance tomorrow.
To date it seems the mega weight saving and small size is going to be pretty useless if I can't get it to start a bike reliably

I have an odyssey on the DB4 , and the thing is amazing, will crank it over for 15 minutes easy before it even shows any sign of draining. Bike had sat for about 2 months until last w/e, alarm draining the battery which usually kills the gel/mat efforts I have had in the past. Started the DB4 after about 10 minutes ( FCR flat side so no choke) and did'nt even show any signs of draining. Also the battery is mounted behind the engine next to the rear header and never had any issues with in over heating . However it weighs about the same as 2 house bricks !!!
Moral of the story Oily is don't ride your bike when its F'in freezing !!!

Not sure I'll ever get my head around this....
Fully charged battery...press the start button...acts like a dodgy battery, barley turning the engine over. Give it three or four minuets, press the button again and it spins the motor which fires straight away .
It acts exactly as it says on the tin in this cold weather. Not sure about putting the lights on for a few minuets as recommended. The exact opposite for a lead acid. I'll persevere with this Shorai for a bit and see how I get on but I still need to sort a battery(s) for the "big bore"

My batteries were a bit flat this even so I started up the FZR400 and jumped them off that.

...I think I'm leaning towards a ballistic this time....
Just got to see if there is a suitable sized example to fit a SB6..

And then see if it's cheaper for me to import one from the states or get one from a local dealer

Seems that the largest ballistic that will fit in the SB6 battery cradle is recommended for "up to" 600cc

Maybe I'll see if I can get a bigger Shorai than a LFX14L2 that will fit in a SB6

I have been having a reading up about these new-fangled lithium batteries.
I didn’t realise there are two basic type. The "Lithium-Ion" batteries, such as you find in laptops, cordless drills etc. And the safer "Lithium-Iron" or "LiFe" battery technology that Shorai are using.
Found some interesting articles of nutters making up their own battery packs out of dead Laptop and power tool batteries. So you could get a battery that would fit in an SB6 and have enough grunt.
Looks like the main issue are,
If one cell or more drops the 0V the battery pack is fooked.
If one cell or move over charges the battery pack is fooked, and will probably explode, burst into flames etc.

Looks like the reason they cost is because they have a Battery Management System (BMS) in them. This monitors their temperature, the discharge of each cell, the charging rate of each cell and how many times they have been discharged / charge.
This is in effect a little PC monitoring the system, and drawing power to do so. This is why they lose 5% of their power per month. So if you purchase one you need to check their manufacture date, as it may have been sat on a shelf for 12 months and reducing its overall life.

So who is going to be mad enough to build their own 12 Cell jobby to fit the SB6 perfectly.

The figure I have quoted may relate to the older Lithium-Ion battery technology. But from what I have read its the BMS that is drawing power and why they lose power when idle. Ye Ballistic quote a figure of 10% / year, but reading their blurb about their balance charger; they may have a simplified BMS on board and rely on their specialist charger to do the job propperly.

I think Im leaning towards 2 x lead acid even though they are 2.6Kg each, against a typical 0.6 - 0.8Kg for a Shorai or Ballistic.

Cant find a single lead acid that is 70mm wide and 12 - 14 Amp
