Rolling chassis dry build - it all seems to fit together okay:



Engine casings need some attention:


Getting the faring on you can start to understand why Bimota went bust 3 times. Never had such a struggle- thought the YB10 Dieci was bad enough! (and yes, Practical Sportsbike was right, it does look like a tube of toothpaste. The bike is called 'Colgate' now.)


Need to check how much clearance for the exhaust - not much - so will have to keep to original exhaust pattern when replacing the rotten one.

Interesting - it uses a Yamaha 3HE engine.
The later YB9's used the 4JH and then ThunderCat engines

Quick update: Little more added onto the bike as have spent time painting parts and sorting out issues on the engine. Still struggling to get it running - seems to be an ignition problem, but once this is sorted the rest should come together relatively easily. Big jobs left are front forks, brakes and body work.

Cannot believe it is over a year since this last post. Thought it was going to be relatively simple to finish the project, but the bike has fought every step of the way. Apart from the engine, there is not one mechanical or electrical part that has not needed looking at. The only item not touched is the engine.

The last major challenge is the dashboard - everything else is now together and the bike has been down the road.

Why has it taken so long? Just seems that nothing has been simple.

Looking forward to riding it this summer.

At least it's still moving along mate. Are you leaving the paint job on the bodywork?? I'm interested to see a photo of the complete bike if you have one. I've had my eye on a YB9 for a while which may be a possible future purchase if it stays on the market long enough, but i would probably look at repainting the bodywork. Thinking some kind of scheme in tri-colourb but i'm hopeless at visualizing paint schemes. Looking for ideas

The most complete photo of the bike I have is the one further up this page. We are not blessed with the Qld sunshine (totally jealous) so until the snow goes and garage gets above freezing there will not be more! My plan is to get the bike on the road for this April (dashboard permitting) so should be in a position to post some more photos then.

The paintwork on this Bellaria is by Kinetic Art. Not to everyone's taste, but is is a professional piece of work and unique so it will probably stay.

Note on YB9 there are two versions: the Bellaria and the SRI. Bellaria is older and slab sided; SRI is younger and more rounded - looks 'modern'. Parts and so on are different. Afraid that is where my knowledge ends on SRI.

Good decision to leave the paint. I did the same with my little yb. It has little chips and the odd scratch but the rest of the paint is a great quality original finish so it stayed... I do prefer the older slac side, nice project, gald you kept going.

There was actually 3 models - YB9 Bellaria '90 - '93 (145 built), YB9SR '94 - '96 (651 built) and YB9SRI '96 - '98 (225 built). I think the SRI was much the same as the SR but with fuel injection.

Crikey, only 145 built. It is rare.

Damn thing does not give up. It has decided to boil over now - the cooling fan does not come on. So off comes the seat unit and air box (which is a pig to fit). But at least the engine is running to cause the overheating!

Well, nearly there. All main functions are working. MOT in the next week or so ready for April. Learnt a lot about Bellarias on the way.

Its the best thing about projects. You learn about them and in turn they reward you with every opening of the garage door. Too many bikes are abandoned for the scrap heap. Well done planter, its a credit bud. Going to look fantastic and whatever you do... dont sell it. Very Happy

Thanks for your interest guys.

Getting to this point would not have been possible without support from other enthusiasts and an ex-Rolls Royce jet engineer who lives near by.

Was going to MOT today, but the snow came down last night so delayed until next weekend now.

The end of this phase of the project. The fairing hides the rusted exhaust nicely.







Next off to the MOT, sort out any problems raised by the MOT examiner, and then ride the bike for a few months to see what breaks and what does not.
