While on a shakedown run on my refreshed SB3 I noticed a falling off of performance and shortly after overtaking a lorry I heard a cracking sound and pulled into the next lay-by.I found the rear disc disintegrated and the caliper on fire. The fire went out shortly, causing no damage, and I was able to remove the twisted bits of metal which were the remains of the pads and get home.

I managed to salvage the caliper with a rebuild kit but after searching I couldn't locate a disc.Various people told me I needed a disc from a Ducati Darmah but they were all offered in 280mm size and mine was 260mm.A disc was finally bought on ebay Australia and the seller then asked if I wanted a pair!
So it all ended happily but my mates take the micky out me for riding with my foot on the brake (which didn't happen).
If you look at previously posted pictures you can see that the banjo at the caliper needs twisting 180 degrees but as it is a pig to bleed I have left it.
I considered using braided hoses but didn't know what would be acceptable when updating old bimotas

Blimey! the only acceptable thing on any rebuild is to be safe ! That could have been a very nasty incident. braided is fine!!

how on earth did that happen to your disc??????/

only thing I can think of is that you ride with your foot on the brake Laughing Laughing

Did the caliper seize on?
how many miles did it take for that to happen?

you must have some grippy rubber on to not have the tyre let go before the heat was needed to generate that sort of failure. Tick off one of those nine lives!

Thought you would all like that.
I have no doubts about the safety and efficiency of any brake hoses on any of my motorcycles,I included the bit about braided hoses as a completely separate thing.Certain factions of the Kawasaki community frown on braided hoses and only fit reproductions of the originals.
Back to the original story. The disc must have been red hot when it finally failed and the caliper obviously was hanging on for some reason. As I said in the second post my right foot was not to blame. The biggest nightmare was sourcing a disc ,I almost despaired of ever finding one.
I have been out quite a lot since this episode and there are no binding or hanging on brakes now.
Please bear in mind that all this activity took place in the spring and it is only because Oily prompted me that I posted anything here.
