Once again the SB6 is stuck. I've got a horrible feeling I shorted something as I reconnected the battery after recharging it. The starter motor doesn't turn, but that little cylinder below the main fuse is clicking away merrily when i press the start button. Could somebody tell me what it is, and where I can get another one? |

Sounds like duff battery's to me.........
There is a 30A fuse on the bottom of the solonoid but if it's clicking then you can probably rule that out.
Grab the jump leads and try it |

In fact, here's the little sucker.........
If you can hear the solenoid clicking when you press the start button then it's unlikely to need replacing. More likely the battery's need sorting out. Like I said in the previous post, grab the jump leads |

If the soleniod clicks then there's not enough charge in the batteries. Make sure the terminals are tight and the batteries are charged ... if they are then they probably need replacing.
If the jump leads don't work then bridge the solenoid terminals with a screwdriver. There will be sparks so don't worry. _________________ Don't read everything you believe |

Yep, battery problem.
Another 16 hours on charge and the starter motor limped round once. Separated batteries, and one had no charge. I guess that while in series the charger was recognising the fully charged one. (or would it not charge both anyway. Trying to think back to physics lessons at school ) |

The word "series" worries me
The urban myth is that the SB6 uses 2 X 6v batteries.
It actually uses 2 X 12v batteries in "parallel"
Disconnect the batteries from each other and then charge both....seperatly.
This will tell you if one or both batteries are duff.
You could save yourself all this heart break by selling me your SB6 |

Thanks to everybody who contributed, and to you Oily
It was the partly the batteries. Middle of last week, I replaced both but it made no difference (at first). So, I pushed it round the front of the house (aiming for the car battery), and down a hill, trying to bump it, also unsuccessfully. However, a last stab at the starter button and lo and behold, the starter motor turned over twice and... with a cough and a roar off she went
I guess maybe it had stood for so long the innards had got a bit gummed up and bumping it freed them off and reduced the resistance to the starter motor?
I returned the old batteries one at a time, and found that one was dud, while one was ok. Don't know how much that contributed to the initial symptoms.
Anyway, all's well as end's well. Thanks again to everybody who took the time to write and offer advice and support.
Merry Christmas all _________________ If it's worth doing it's worth over-doing |

If it's been standing then replace the plugs before you use it in anger (or for any distance) _________________ Don't read everything you believe |
