I really like the trellis frames and all the exotic bit's that go with them........
it's just those badly designed, rattly, fragile lawn mower engines I cant stand.........
Now a couple of people have done the ultimate conversion and thrown TL1000 engines in those frames..................Now we're talking Laughing

Not enough cylinders, I know, but at least it's one of Suzuki's hooligan engines Laughing

You are a wise man indeed. The 851 engine is destined for other things as we speak. The doner engine will come from a .... nother ducati. However, it will be a modern St4s ( 996) with an extra 45 bhp then the 851. It also is reliable, although I have never had any trouble with my 888's. Going to try to start rebuilding in ernest this week.

So, this is my other 888 which is a slightly later model then the 851. It should give you an idea of how they look incase you did not know already.

Its getting there George. Its my favourite type of therapy... Still waiting for some final bits and pieces to start the 851 rebuild before I head off to work again. The best thing is seeing a sad old wreck being brought back to its prime ( or better) and giving it a fresh start. I do the same with my houses and always get a kick out of it. The wifes next.

Wheels done, refurb of the sprocket carrier and original discs. Got lucky with the wheels themselves which were in great condition, amazingly, under years of grime and mud just left. It may be that the dirt actually protected them from abuse? I'll change the tyres later Wink

Here is a pic of the doner bike. An st4s which is handing over its engine, loom and brain to the 851. The 851 engine will be going into the st4s whcih next year will be either a cafe racer or flat tracker?

There is a slight chance that this ST4s engine may run into the "flakey rocker syndrome" that most post-'96 Desmoquattro engines are prone to experience. I'd check the rockers prior to installing the engine in the 851 and then make sure you check them with each valve adjustment/check. I've got a 2002 748 and have gone through 4 rockers at 6k miles and a few more at 18k miles when I installed Megacycle resurfaced openers. Only the openers have gone bad in my 748...so far.

Laughing Thats great advice. I had the rockers and valves checked today in fact. I also changed the belts as I had no service history... Wink

The 851 is an ex world endurance race bike and as such has a strong engine but very highly strung. The st4s engine is modern, 996 and 35 bhp more then the 851 even though its been tuned down for torque so perfect for high mileage and reliability. It is a common mod among 888 enthusiasts. I bought the ST4 for just 1500 pounds, it would cost far more then that to try to get the 851 to the same power and it would be a engine strip every other ride! I was going to sell the remainder of the ST4 in bits but I have a v5 and what better use of the 851 engine instead of it jammed up against the garage wall for years. That will be next winters project.
