The new db4 has still been runnig a bit rough so i pulled the fairing off today to check a few things.

The plugs were wet and very black - running rich?

The shitty foam air filter has completely disintegrated and is mostly gone. Gone through the carbies i imagine.

I was thinking about junking the airbox all together and fitting pod filters. Has anyone done this? Or should i get a replacement air filter and keep the aibox? Where would i get a replacement air filter from?

I'm going to pull the carbies off to strip them and clean them. Does anyone have the settings for these carbies - float heights, pilot screw settings etc. If someone could email me a scan of the relevent pages from a workshop manual or a link for an electronic manual that would be great.

Any other advice is appretiated.

Thanks in advance,
Brian

Hi Brian, I havent checked the air filter on my tricolor yet, its the next thing on the list, but i asked the same question and got an answer thats on the Forum, as the air filter comes from an Italian Generator, yes thats right and there is a link on the Forum to a UK supplier and the website and prices, perhaps that would help you in Oz. Search for posts under 2bims and you'll find the link
This is the company that sells the air filters

Not sure on the carb settings, I have a 900SS that has Mikuni 38mm carbs (same as DB4) and I have just bought a brand new set of NOS 38mm Mikunis for 80GBP, along with a rake of other gear from an italian on Ebay.it. I can send you a link if you like, but you really will have to get an ebay and paypal account. I bet you can't buy the spares you'll need for the carbs for that price, and this is a full set of the 2 carbs, all in, no messing. Can send you link if you like as he has lots more for sale

Brian,
my DB4 foam filter has also just about disintegrated.
It didn't look like a 'Mahle' or anything sold on by that company.
I ended up cutting-up an AC filter to size.

The Factory Workshop manual is pretty useless: some stuff on electrical wire routing and chassis torques. Bugger-all on the engine....
Photocopies are kicking around, but original ones are really expensive, and not really worth it...

I took Bob Steinbugler's advice (the US guru at Bimota Spirit) and bought a Hayes manual for the 91 to 96 Ducati 600,750, 900.
ISBN 1 85960 290 8

And maybe this is you 'opportunity' to upgrade to Keihin flatsides ??
I hear they're the tits.

(Note: I already ran this post thru the 'US-Aussie' translator for you !)

I'll check out the site for the air filter. I finally got myself a paypal account, just need to get an ebay account now Wink . This could be very dangerous for my bank balance Laughing . I'll pull the carbs tomorrow and have a look at them, probably not much wrong that a good clean can't fix. I'll do a search for 900ss carb settings i guess.

Thanks for the info Jeremy. The flatslides would be nice but i've read that the standard tank won't fit with the flatslides due to the throttle cable arrangement. There's a db4 corse special for sale in aus in pretty rough condition. I offered to buy it to strip it for parts but i think i may have offended the seller as i haven't had any word back Wink .

Oh... thanks for the translation Laughing

Rummage around on this site for carb settings for Duc Engines, as some like for 900cc Monster etc give turn numbers, needle jet sizes, etc etc.
http://www.motorbikespecs.net/index.dyn?flag=2&model_id=5835165&make=Ducati

They give grades of oil also, although in your warmer climate, perhaps something different.

Fully synth or not, is the case, much discussed and argued about. I only use Fully Snyth on 2 things, my KTM and my BMW, all the others use old fashined oil. The engines were designed around normal oil so why pay extra ? If it aint broke don't fix it Laughing Whats more important than type of oil is the frequency that you change it

definitely old oil... fully synthetic is often the cause of clutch slip on older bikes. Crying or Very sad

Yeh Soz Pomps, its just my OCD that a Duc Nut mentioned slipping clutches and oil, Laughing and the quessy was related to a DB4/Sb6, but I echo your comments. Shouldn't be sucked into exorbitant prices for fully synth for engines not designed to use it.

ok... finally got the carbs removed today and dropped the fuckers. Knocked a hole in one of the diaphragm covers Embarassed . I'll do a run around torrow to see if i can find a new one.

Stripped the carbs and cleaned them out. They weren't too bad apart from a few bits of foam air filter and crud. Haven't checked the float heights as i still can't find any specs for these carbs. Set the mixture screw at 1 1/2 turns out, not sure if this is correct. If i can't find a replacement diaphragm cover i'll patch it up to test run until i can get one.

Might just buy those NOS carbs that you were talking about 2bims Rolling Eyes .

I'll give the bike a good look over and clean up while i've got the fairing off. Need to fix quite a few dodgy little things like mis-matched bolts and screws etc.

He also has pairs of diaphragms also, although strangely around 50GBP whereas the new carbs with the dia's are only 80GBP.

Re-sent the DB4 workshop manual this morning, did you get them? 6 emails?

Yeah sorry for all the mucking around you had to do Steve. I got 5 and had trouble with my connection while receiving the 6th. I'll try again tomorrow. It will still be in my internet providers cache.
