Has anyone used a lithium battery on their sb6.
I am looking at one of these.
http://www.shoraipower.com/p-154-lfx14l2-bs12.aspx

Has more cranking amps than my db4 battery so hoping its man enough for the job , is smaller than one of the 6v standard items and the Ducati US forum seem to rate the make ALOT.

Its a well travelled battery. Thats for sure. They are made in Japan, and they are for sale in the UK, but these are sourced from the States. Over here like all Lithium batteries they are about £175 , but in the land of plenty they are a bit cheaper.
Think most of the lithium race batteries are made in the states, and alot like the Ballistic orange and black race batteries that are being pushed in Blighty by PB / SB / FB mags use a number of U2 batteries wired up in a plastic case. These Shorai ones are proper batteries.
I have an Odyssey battery ( which are American)on the DB4 which has about 220 cranking amps and as 2Bims can vouch, it will turn my db over for about 10-15 minutes without even appearing to be draining, so I have high hope for these lithium batteries, and the fact it is smaller than one 6V sb6 battery is a bonus. No need to mess about making a holder, just re-route one cable.
They can be charged with a standard charger as well.
Just an offer as think this container will be the last one coming for a while.

That's the second time you've mentioned 6v sb6 battery's.

6N11A-1B Yusa 6V batteries, 2 off. Had the same make and model for the last 16 years, OK these are about my 6th set, but supplied from Bimota to me in 1995 with them and replaced them like for like ever since.

Now there's a thing............
I'm thinking you've got a very early frame number there vort.
I've heard about these mythical duel 6v batteries and dismissed them as "why would they".
Every SB6 I've owned and worked on has had 2 X 12v batteries including frame number 159 Shocked
Wonder why they stopped using 6v.

Here is a theory, up to the late eighties,Bimota could not get a single
12v Battery with the adequate cranking ampage capacity to fit the area they wished to place them,
hence they used two 6v batteries that would fit which combined in series had sufficient cranking power.

When some major manufacture, this could have been bike, boat or
some other type required a 12v battery to fit a small area, got a battery
company to mass produce -- helped Bimota out

They then managed to get two 12v batteries which combined in parralel
gave them the cranking capacity that they required and fitted within the space that Bimota desired.

Nah - I don't believe that.

I'd go with - Bimota packaged the engine in their beam frame put on the fuel tank and airbox. Maybe they were going to put the battery where the shock is, who knows but anyway the battery was moved away from the engine. They found the smallest 12v batties were used on moped, but as said said the cold cranking wasn't enough .... but if there were 2 it would work and the 2 small batteries weighted less than a single one.

If Bimota had wanted to use a single battery they would have just designed the bincle to house it, it was afterall a clean sheet design.

Having been involved in power storage for the communications industry,I have seen a considerable shift in battery technology over the past 20 years.

From the days of the lead/acid traction or leclanche type cells, through the
fully enclosed "maintenance free" gell type unit to the lithium/ion
polymer units. I have seen the batteries halve in size and weight yet
still retain the same ampere hour rating but double or even quadruple in cost per unit

So a single battery with the cranking capability they wanted would
probably have been twice the size and double the weight of what eventually went in, considering there was no where else to put it,in a mono shock frame, with the layout they were using, a single battery of that size would have pushed the headlights /fairing further forward .

There are owners who have removed airbox, and relocated battery to there, it is open to opinion if this was any better.

Vort, are you looking at just one of these battery's to replace the two lead acid?

That sure would be a weight saving.
Just thinking ahead for my new project Wink

Yep, one battery to replace the 2. Still waiting for them to arrive in the container from the States though. Bloody thing has been held up again, hopefully on its way soon. Oh and there may be a spare battery on there if you need it ?
