Ahhhhhhhh, the joys of italian electrics.
OK I pop over to Buxton to say hi to OldSkoolSuzuki bods.
In the middle of nowhere I had a total electical failier.
Called out RAC.
14V across the battery OK.
Good continuity in the earth.
All fuses OK.
No ignition, No lights, No horn.
Obviously a break in the circit somewhere.
So where are the weak points I should be looking for.
Any help will be most apreciated.
Thanks in advance. _________________ Si...

Im just in the process of reading Oilys thread *And so it begins"
Just found the 30A fuse hidden away. I may check that.
The confusing thing is there is no electical power.
Noted I have a chafed cable line down to bare wire under the battery box. Its the slim set of wires that split off from the main loom and dissapears up inbetween the batteries somewhere.
Ill get a new bat for my multimeter tomorrow and start searching.
Once again thanks to you all for the ideas.
On another topic.
The CRAP bits of rubber infills. Do you lot (probbably Oily) remove these cant see what good they are. A bog stock Suza doesnt use them. I have read dibates about the rubber gubbins under the oir box over the altinator.
opinions please. _________________ Si...

What bits of rubber infill?
maybe added by previous owner?
the only bit of rubber I know of is the bit you mentioned, over the alternator..........throw it away
If the "secret" 30A fuse has blown, I would expect there to be a reason
Do you think I should take it off your hands? Could do a deal on one of mine _________________ SB6 mk1 (project mega light, big bore)

With al respect F### O## its mine.
There are rubber infills running from the head down either side of the motor. They look OE. but why. does it matter if you can see the motor when looking down the side openings of the fairing.
Would a dead altinator break the circuit?
Im just confused, one second hapilly puring bim, next nothing at all.
I hate electrics, I ues to design specialist cooling fans for telecomunications industry. Worked with an airodynamisist who didnt belive in elctrics as he couldnt see it, Bit of a ludite as he printed out emails to read them. But knew a sh#t load about airodynamics and fans. And designed some bits on the harrier jump jet.
I have resined myself to getting pi##ed tonight and face the music in the morning..

Shouldn't have 14v unless the engine is running.
Duff alternator......ummm, possibly.
Bits of rubber down the sides of the engine.....Nah, not OE, throw them away.
They'll just cause overheating _________________ SB6 mk1 (project mega light, big bore)

Mine has them too and they do look original. Maybe on later bikes? Or maybe just fitted by one bim bloke in the factory in particular?
Si, i'd check the 30a fuse and other fuses again. Maybe that bare wire that you mention has shorted while on the ride. _________________ '99 DB4 #104, '96 SB6 #1165, '94 DB2 J #652, '99 DB4 #088, '08 VTX1800, '93 ZXR750R M1, '95 ZXR750, '95 ZXR750 Race Bike, '94 CBR400rr NC29 Race Bike, '94 CB250, '49 BSA C10 250, '61 BSA A10 650, '89 ZXR750, '91 Ducati 851 |

I had the rubber matts on mine as well. It overheated the alternator which perished the rubber bush inside it. It did not cause total fail, just a slow rundown of systems as you would expect. (Replacement unit for the alternator is a suzuki rf900 unit) Good luck _________________ Pomps

Looks like I have found it.
30A fuse behind the headlight.
I think the chaffed wire had shorted on the battery box as I was turning the bike on full lock.
Need to get a fuse, and re-wrap the harness.
Then figure out the best way to keep that cable out of the way.
Thanks all for the help.
And no Oily the hangover isnt bad. _________________ Si...

Glad you found the problem, that's the most difficult bit out of the way
As for the hang over....I have anti-hang over medication....It's called alcohol

What you have experienced with the 30a fuse is my nightmare. A burned fuse and can not reach I, except when you remove the fairing, and that is not easy work quickly along the road.
I have a temporary solution made.
See the pics
Now you can chance the main fuse without any problems. |
