Will the standard SB2 frame accept a GS 1000 engine? I don't know if the frames on the SB3s were modified from the SB2s to accept the larger capacity engine or whether the factory used up some old stock frames for the 1000cc bike.

That's not going to be easy to answer.
It might come down to judging it from pictures and then taking a punt on the frame.

The old "Bible" references that both the SB2 and 3 frames used the same Chrome Moly tubes that could be broken down into two sections, semi-spatial open cradle structure, with the engine being used as an integral stiffening component, which is not referenced for the Sb2, but that in itself should not be an issue as you are going newer bigger engine into an older frame so engine mounts for bracing not such an issue. I'm sure you would be better off on some Old Suzy GS Forum and get your dimensions that way from some helpful old geezas. There is a photo of a frame for the SB2, but then assume you have this, and an exploded drg of the SB3 that shows differences,in cross bracing and engine mounts. But again I'd start with the pure engine, and look for differences there, if hugely different then the tolerance and squeeze and shortness of space on Bimota frames aint going to make life easy

sb3 was much smaller though? It had a 2 stroke engine 350 ...

If you've got the chance to by a SB2 frame then do it. If you can't fit the 1000 then stick a 750 big bore in there instead.

Knowing the old Suzuki, air cooled engines, I woulden't think you would have too much bother getting any of them to fit Wink

Maybe a change of engine mounting plates etc.
If it sounds too daunting, I might be in the market for a frame like that Wink

The bike is complete but needs engine work and given how much better the 1000cc engine is I had to consider it as an alternative. MacIntosh frames could accept a number of GS engines so I thought the SB2 frame might do likewise.

Have a word on OldSkool Suzuki forum, see if the mounting points are the same and how much higher and/or wider the barrels + head are.

It seems like a good plan to put the bigger cc engine in, however I'd keep the old engine if it's number is on the ownership documents

In the pictures that I have of SB2 and SB3 frames, the lower engine mount is different- just a boss on the SB2 and a long tab (slotted?) on the sb3- probably means the lower fixing bolt is more foward on the 1000 engine??
I suppose you won't know for sure till it's offered up.

Ive been offline for a couple of months so missed this posting.Here is a quote from brochure of the day "Derived from the highly successful SB2,theGS1000 SB3 version is significantly different, being designed exclusively for the GS1000 engine.The two chassis are not interchangeable, the GS750 engine will not fit the GS1000 chassis and vice versa."
This obviously didn't allow for an enterprisig person making alterations to make things fit.

I did a bit of further research and saw a frame of an SB3 on raidermotorsport.com.au which clearly showed the lower rear engine mounts to be different and the book on Bimota by NADA clearly talks about the frame and rider support being different. Thanks for your info!
Having done all the checking on this model I have agreed to buy it finally and hope to have it imported to Australia in a month or two and it will be restored when I finish the SFC 750 currently on the stand.
