How should they be routed ??? when I first got my bike they were done one way, then the dyno tuners did it another, but that pushed the tank up ... what's the proper way

Yes ... they'd have to wouldn't they.

Do they go vertically up and over the rail or under it ... like the picture

Cool - do you have pic ?
At the moment mine are over an the bike's occationally loosing power and running on two. I wiggle the hoses and it will pick up again.

Time for the bodywork to come off again.
