Yup - lets hear it for the French. Without them you wouldn't have managed it.
The French on the other hand ended up skint and that gave rise to their Revolution, reducing there world influence.
The America Indians lost everything.
Without the USA draining the British economy we had more money and incentive to concentrate our empire building elsewhere and without the French we achieve both the argicultural and industrial revolutions first. The loss of the American colonies is what's sometimes called the end of the First and begining of the Second British Empires.

I had that very conversation over dinner last night with my American work mates... who knew very little about it! A nation built off the back of subjecting one ethnic group to slavery and the cleansing through massacre of another. But, still my favourite place to be! Shocked

Slavery wasn't invented by or for the Americas and a lot of it was black on black .... one tribe enslaving another to sell as a commodity.
Doesn't make it right or ethical but it goes a little way to explain it.

The Coast Gaurd was formed to stop British boats and sometimes villages being taken into slavery.

True, but without a buyer there would be no seller... Interestingly Monrovia on the west coast was formed as a country to send all the slaves that were released post abolition. Any slave boats caught were escorted to Monrovia where all on board were released. A complete tribal mishmash that has been a very stable country in relation to the tribal issues caused by western borders imposed on every other part of Africa.

The vast majority of my ancestors came to the US prior to the revolution, and several fought in the Revolutionary war. Interestingly, a huge bulk of my ancestors were from England and Wales (others from Germany, Sweden, Solvakia, and a couple others including native American Indians).

As for the slavery aspect, I think I may have had an ancestor or two that had slaves, but from what I've seen, all of my ancestors who faught in the Civil war were on the Union side, as they were living in New Hampshire, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Kentucky. Most of my wife's family was southern during at the time of the Civil War, so they were on the losers' side. Shocked Laughing

Interesting that the French were brought up. If it were not for the USA, they'd be speaking German right now. Razz I've been to gun shows where they were selling French WWI and WWII firearms (bolt action). One of the guys was advertising his as "Never shot. Only dropped once". Laughing Laughing

Jeeso Guys.....9 following posts and not a single mention of anything with 2 wheels? Could have tries to slip one or two in there surely?

tis interesting though, that Britain invented Concentration camps and slavery, although we like to keep quiet about it.

And then the "good Old Days" when the British Empire ruled 2/3rds of the worlds land mass, and now we buy our steel from Indian Owned Countries, because we couldn't make ours pay anymore, not bleating, we let the nation crawl into the gutter as regards production, and National Pride became very diluted. I suppoe we still make nice shortbread and whiskey though Laughing

2Bims, I think your giving us Brits a bit of a bashing.
Yes we dont make much in the UK because we do eaither end of the cycle.
We design it, then we sell it. There is no mony in making it.
After all Britain does have the Worlds Larges micro processor design company. And you all have one of their chips in a bit of kit.
Ever heard or ARM. They make bugger all, they design and then license their designs to just about every one.

Usless fact No 3475.
Did you know Britain was able to have the industrial revolution because of the Tea Break.

Answers on a postcard to the usual address.

Not trying to "knock" the UK too much....And we are great in design and license and sell to other people to make, Like Phillips who invented the VCR and CD players, then everyone else buys the license and who has a Phillips product in their house? Not many. It would be nice if we made more stuff, maybe give the jobs to the 4 million unemployed?

Or if the govt was a little more supportive of companies, but properly supported them, bit like Italy and the US, the former still having all of its motorbike and car manufacturers for a lot lot longer than the UK managed to retain theirs, although note that Italy does now seem to be having to sell a few off to the Germans....Ah now there is perhaps the best example of continuing improvement and prosperous nation, but perhaps best not to go too much into their ways of "bonding a nation together"........ Laughing (I don't think I mentioned the war?)

Don't think the British invented slavery, didn't we get it off the Italians ???

Had the French not stopped to help the Americas they would have (arguably) avoided the Revolution, they could have achieved the Argicultural and Industrial Revolutions first which would have made them the dominant power. They would have undoubtedly influenced Western Europe and possibly Russia too. WW1 wouldn't have happened as we know it so it's unlikely WW2 would either.
Who knows though.
It is interesting that the anti French feeling in the USA is born out them not following into the illfated Afganistan invasion and the second Irqi war ... that was in itself illegal. Ironic when you consider the US got it's pants (underwear) pulled down by a handful of ragtops who have cost the US billions
