I have a question some of you will love! In the days before the forum when I was a lowly one SB6 owner, the thermostat housing on my 94 SB6 basically disintegrated into white powder. No amount of welding could fix it! What to do back then, simple remove thermostat, pipe straight through and only drive bike on warm days after it has heated up! Been like that for 10 years now. Question, does this seem reasonable? Better question, is the thermostat bespoke Bimota or does it come from the suzuki and where can I get a replacement or should I stick to warm weather rides? Og Very Happy

I've been looking for a thermostat for a SB6 for quite some time. Definitely not Suzuki and definitely very rare Laughing
I've been running the big bore without a thermostat for a while now with no adverse affects. Just warm it up first and cane it to keep it nice and warm Laughing

Thanks Oily. The days before the forum where dark days indeed. I will carry on with my sunny day approach to riding and keep an eye out for the elusive thermostat housing. I suppose it makes the bike lighter! Og Cool

used but as new.

but not terribly cheap either.

How difficult would it be to use some other thermostat, modify it if necessary, and custom fabricate a housing for it to fit in the same location as the original or very close to it? I'm not familiar with the thermostat on the SB6, so I was wondering. Have a pic, Oily?

Edit - From the picture from crankcase's link, it looks like they make similar ones for marine applications - http://www.ebay.com/itm/Marine-Inline-Thermostat-Housing-Fresh-Water-Cooling-Bypass-/370584615898

Same as this one - http://bpi.ebasicpower.com/p/SEASK3002/Inline+Thermostat+Housing+Fresh+Water+Cooling

That one looks to be 1-1/2" (38.1 mm) water connections and 5/8" (15.8 mm) bypass and probably from a Seadoo watercraft by the part number.

From other research, it looks like some tractors use similar designs.

I did find that one when I was restoring my Mk11 but couldn't justify that cost Crying or Very sad
Daz from metalsliders gave me his for a fiver Wink
People don't realise what these things are worth and when they have a cooling problem, first thing they do is ram a screwdriver through it to eliminate it.
Had two like that now but also rescued two "duf" ones that were supposedly stuck.
DD..I've looked at making the housings which would not be an issue but have yet to find a thermostat which is small enough. Probably from an Italian moped or something as it's a quarter of the size of a GSXR.

I imagine there isn't much room in there.

I edited my post above a few times before realizing you'd replied. You see the one I listed above that is similar to the Bimota's? What is the size of the inlet and outlet pipes of the SB6's?

inlet/outlet is 30mm....
Your right, there is very little room, the Thermostat is usually wedged twixt engine and frame unless you butcher the frame ( Laughing ). The whole thermostat arrangement could be moved around the cooling system perhaps to the left side of the engine but where it is, on top of the engine is obviously the optimum place.

This go-kart thermostat looks smaller than the one listed above, but they don't have the dimensions, unfortunately. Looks like the plug is where you can put a fitting for the bypass...

I'm at work at the tail end of an 18-hour shift. I have some time to kill to surf the Internet. Laughing

Edit - You'd think they'd give the effin' measurements of the inlet and outlets....

Are we over thinking this though ?

The thermostat housing sits behind the block on this FZR400. If we were to use two bottoms bolted together it should work and it would be inline. I can't remember where the recess for the thermostat is, it has an integral gasket and different themperature openings are available.

That's where I was going (eventually, when time allowed) two billet caps bolted together BUT there is still limited space so a compact solution is required.
I like the idea of being able to change the stat (unlike original) for different temperatures Wink

I know there is no image to the inline thermostat but it would have a 45 degree and 55 degree option too...
