OK, to explain. The fuel pump is needed in certain circumstances, due to the addition of Ram-air on the 6R. If we rewind slightly to the pressurised float bowls, as the bikes speed rises into license losing figures and way beyond, the pressure in the inlet rises too obviously due to the air being forced into the inlet. That in turn pressurises the float bowls so all things are equal, and the fuel is still drawn out of the needle/jet by the intake charge. The problem is encountered when at sustained speed, the pressure in the float bowl reaches the same pressure as the fuel in the feed line to the carbs, or exceeds it, so fuel is then pushed from the float bowls back into the tank. The bike then runs out of fuel, until it slows down sufficiently to allow the pressure in the fuel pipe to exceed the pressure in the float bowls, and away we go again. On such bikes, the fuel pump is needed so the fuel line pressure is always above that of the inlet/float bowl, so this scenario cannot occur, as the gravity feed on a low level tank simply may not be enough.

Daz.
