Hi all,
After the back end of my treasured SB8K caught fire, I need the whole back part of the bike to recover the situation. Basically one of the silencers caught fire after the bike had been running badly for a couple miles the exhaust fire burnt through the tail unit, number plate bracket rear lights, seat and most of the subframe. The silencers melted in some places.

Has anyone got any sources apart from Bimota that is?

On another tack - does anyone one know if any other SB series back ends will bolt on and do the business - eg SB8R or SB6R etc.

Just a quick update on my back end replacement. Well Bimota have sourced everything except the fuel pump. About 200 parts in all amounting to about 4k euro list price.

Parts are going to be shipped over in the next few days. Just to say Ingrid and Alessandro at Bimota have been a great help and Bimota even gave me a massive discount (40%) when they heard about the way in which the bike got damaged in the first place.

So hats off to Bimota After sales, good going considering these are parts for a nominal 50 off build nearly 10 years ago. )

Can't wait to get her back on the road even if the SB8RS is keeping me very happy in the meanwhile.

I'm presuming that you got shelled out by the insurance company AND bought the bike back from them?
If so, that means you'll have TWO

What happened is that the insurance company gave me £8K plus the bike back, which funded the SB8RS.

Was thinking of using the SB8K for spares, since Woods after 6 months of searching, claimed the parts were not available for it, but then I came across Ingrid/Alessandro and after another 3 months here we are 2 weeks away from a rebuild hopefully ready in time for the spring/summer.

The bodywork will still be a bit messy but I am planning to patch that up hopefully RS paint will have something. Otherwise, the panels are available but about £2k each.

Are the panels carbon or fiberglass? either way, they should repair no problem. Might just have to paint em instead of having loads of carbon showing.
Do you know what catergory of write off it was? i.e. A,B,C,D.
Whatever, gonna be a cheap SB8

It was a cat A - ie the bike was ordered to be broken, but that was only because the Carbon fibre seat support and rear subframe had been damaged so badly.

The fibre survived a1 but all of the lacquer and bonding went up really fast, it is highly flammable, it left a kind of carbon fibre woven fabric behind. The heat was so bad that the exhausts actually melted.

I have good and bad luck with bikes, the SB8K was bought a few years back from NLM with the proceeds of an insurance claim in which I was awarded a nice £16K following a really nasty "didn't see you mate" accident when I was riding on a Guzzi Scura which just about dug its own trench into the road but could not be brought to a halt in time, the bike weighed a tonne! I thought immediately afterwards, my YB8 or SB6 would have stopped then - I am going to return to Bimota after this!

Think it needs to go back on the road as a "Q" plate or something like it but it will need the full SVA etc...

Write Off Categories
The insurance write off categories are as follows:

Category A Insurance Write Off - the vehicle must scrapped and no parts or components can be sold other than for scrap. Amounts vary but the scrap value rarely covers the cost of recovery and delivery to a scrap yard.

Category B Insurance Write Off - the vehicle must not be used again but non- structural and roadworthy parts and components may be recovered for use in other vehicles. Care must be taken to ensure that they are not critical components with important safety functions.

Category C Insurance Write Off - the vehicle is repairable but the parts and labour would exceed the value of the car. This is a tricky situation as there are plenty of amateur and professional mechanics who could use second hand parts to repair these vehicles at much lower prices than the list costs for parts and labour.

Category D Insurance Write Off - the vehicle is economically repairable but other factors are involved that cause the insurer to declare the vehicle a write off. Perhaps the replacement car hire is too costly or it will take too long for a specialist part to be delivered.

Thanks Oily, if I can't get the real bits it will be the next best thing.

Just a shade away from getting a full set of replacement bits. A box arrived from Bimota but it was full of baseball hats T-shirts and DB5,6,7bits instead of my bits. So close yet so far, but I am sure it will get sorted out, hopefully just after the last of the salt has been washed away.
