Hi chaps,

I've got a question about how to repair a minor defect on my db4 fairing.

The fairing is broken where the front left indicator mounts. The fairing is plastic and i'm not sure how to best repair it. Not sure if i should have it plastic welded, repair it with fibreglass or repair it with the likes of aryldite or another epoxy.

Any ideas??

Your not going to beat plastic welding but I've had excellent results with plastech, never had a fail yet Wink
stay away from fibreglass on plastic, brilliant on sb6 fairing which is fibreglass Wink

I'd use plastex every time
Some plastic welding can change the plastic and it gets brittle.

This is a little write-up I did when I welded my wife's '94 GSXR...

...Nice write up Wink
From experience, if you get the plastic too hot, particularly ABS, it can make the whole thing very brittle. With the thickness of the fairing, shouldn't make much difference but with something quite thin, .... Crying or Very sad
...Also, a shed load cheaper than farming these jobs out to so called experts Wink

Thanks for the replies fellas. It's now sorted. There was a piece broken right out where the indicator mounts to and a small piece missing. I put what ieces i had back in and filled over with epoxy then strengthened the back with a stianless washer also glued on. Looks plenty strong enough.

I have no idea how it broke. The bike hasn't been dropped since i've had it and doesn't look likes it was dropped previously either.

Am I looking at anything in particular or just general bad design and engineering oh and rusty exhaust Wink

P.S.
From both an engineering and design point of view, vibration are the destructive enemy (unless your building a vibration machine) Wink

That's what i like about you oily... always have something nice to say Smile .

I guess any engine can be designed to run smooth and without vibration, but people (customers) don't always like it. Lets face it, image sells. When Honda started building cruisers they designed the VT1100 with their usual flawless engineering. Even though it was a great bike it wasn't very popular because it was TOO smooth. They worked out that what a lot people liked about that style of bike (namely Harley) was the Vibration and lumpyness of the engine. When Honda engineers were designing the VTX1800 they learnt from their mistake (with the VT1100) and designed an inherent out of balance in the engine to give the vibration and lumpyness. Interesting hey.

Oooo, sounds like you'd prefer me to lie and tell you what a wonderful design an Italian V twin is Laughing We won't get into good and bag engine design as most of the info is sales propaganda anyway.

It's Christmas eve today (here)so presume it's Christmas day there? have a good one Brian And all the convicts on the wrong side of the planet and I hope you get everything you want and need Wink
