Well I just received my used parts from Germany. YEAH!

Wait, .....what? He painted the magnesium lower triple, silver????? WTF!

Now, I have to strip the paint and polish the part. I guess I didn't have enough to worry about.....LOL

I am just going to stay positive and fix the flub and be done with it. Does meaningless labor add to the value of a motorcycle???? Wink

....and the "low fuel" warning sender is different. It should work, but is in fact different. I hate "different" ........ Rolling Eyes

LOL! I'll say......... Laughing

Even though the SB6 & 6R were "massed produced" I guess I can say I have a "one off" motorcycle. Wink

Mass production techniques ... Still only about 1100 made, so rarer than a Ducati Desmo

Yes indeed!

Sarti has it as:

SB6's 1,144 built (790 red, white, carbon. 332 red, dark grey and only 22 all grey) I think Oily will attest as to which is fastest LOL.

SB6R's 600 built all red, black and carbon.....
......all faster than the SB6...(when they are running) LOL Wink

They have to go faster because they don't look as good Very Happy

Actually they're faster due to the airbox being bigger

If this is magnesium, it should be painted... if it is aluminium... then you are going for wax on / wax off Embarassed

From what I have been told, the lower triple on the SB6R is magnesium and the OEM unit (the broken one on my bike, that I am replacing) is 'polished'.

Unless, it's just shiny because I wax it off too much....... Laughing Shocked

Magnesium reacts with air so it has to be painted

Well........I can assure you my OEM lower triple is NOT painted and is as shiny as chrome with NO paint on it, clear or otherwise.

I guess we have another example of my bike being a "one off" custom motorcycle....LOL Laughing

Again, I am perplexed. Question Very Happy

I am basing my presumptions, on this piece being magnesium as opposed to aluminum, from what the welder that tried to fix my lower triple, after it broke, told me. As it turned out my "JB-Weld" repair was better than his welding job. Sooooooo.........LOL.

So does anyone know definitively, what the lower triple clamp on an SB6R is made of? Aluminum or magnesium?????

Not that it effin' matters, I'm just curious, at this point. Laughing Laughing Laughing

Confirmed, .....it's aluminum. I performed the "vinegar" test and the solution remained clear as it does on aluminum and not cloudy gray as it would on magnesium.

I also have determined that it was powder coated, as opposed to painted, as well. So, it will be extra hard to regain the polished aluminum status as on my original. I tried the auto parts store stripper and it didn't touch the coating, time to step up and buy the aluminum aircraft stripper and give 'er another go!

What a pain in the a............... Rolling Eyes Wink Laughing

WOW! What a pain in the a55!

The stripper didn't work so I did it the hard way. (Powder coat is as tough as nails!) I used my angle grinder with the gasket remover pad (similar to "scotch bright") typically used to remove old valve cover gaskets from the head and/or cover.

Then wet sanded, by hand, in increasing grit grades. from 220, 320, 500 and then polished with my paint buffer and some metal polish I had laying around. So, all tolled, about 6 hours of, absolutely no fun, labor....

Viola...vvvvv

Now comes the fun part.....The dreaded "Remove and Replace" of the lower triple clamp. And, while the forks are out I will change the fork oil.[/img]
