Hi Guys
Please correct me if I am wrong but it looks like I have to drop the motor out of the frame to remove the starter motor?
Starter not engaging so will strip the primary side first to check drive cog. |

Starter not engaging |
Can you please expand on that ??? Does the starter spin or you press the start button and it sounds like a flat battery ?
If the later I'm which Trev , sprag bearing ( in the process of doing mine !!! one step forward, two back ) |

Hi, Starter just spins without turning engine, 1st hurdle looks like have to make up special tool to remove ring nut holding clutch basket.
Magnetic drain plug looked like it had a hedgehog attached.
Anyone selling special tools in UK?

Sounds like you and Vort are doing synchronised Due repairing.
Defo sounds like sprag bearing.
I have some stuff coming from Piero either tomorrow or next week, if you are quick, I can ask him for the parts. |

Trying to source a tool to undo the round nut but coming up blank at the moment. Have found a Ferrari tool that might do the job but £125 and made to order so can't even try before I buy.
Piero has none but could get some made but no cost or real time scale.
Getting a few of the sprag clutch housing coming across, you want one adding ? about £15 or £250 ish for the full gear/bearing assy.
If I find a tool I will let you know. |

Hi Trev
Good idea especially as this one used for track only, only problem a roller starter would cost more and I still have to get the debris out of the drive system. Turned it over with a clutch basket tool tonight and sounds horrible like something loose inside.
Vort could do with a name to call you, if you have any luck with the tool let me know, I will see if any local engineering firm can make up.
Loath to know what to order parts wise until I see the damage, cart and horse situation.
Thanks Guys

I was going to do a thread on this but was waiting till I actually did it before I started it , which is good as I like you are stuck until I find this tool. Tried a few specialise tool places but no-one really ever seen anything like it.
Trying to get a cost and time for tool, have asked for a batch of 3, so will let you know.
My advice is not to run it as if its the sprag bearing/housing there will be bits floating around, hence the hedgehog drain plug. |

The Saga continues
Discovered you do not have to take the ring nut off to remove the drive casing to get into the sprag clutch.
The casing will come off with the clutch basket attached, if only I can get it passed the rear weld on the beam frame.
If the engine was out it would not be a problem to leave the ring nut and basket attached but in the frame back to the idea of getting the nut and basket off to allow more movement around the clutch drive shaft. |

Just drop the motor 5mm then out she comes then ?
Can you leave the front engine mount bolt in and pivot down ?

It undoes with a punch and careful hammer application. Warm it ( the nut)up first to weaken the loctite that they used. Tool is simple to make once you have the nut off or have a spare. Ill let you know how tool manufacture goes - essentially a plasma cut ring out of 6mm steel welded to a socket! _________________ KB1x2, SB3 SB4 BB1 DB2 Vdue Evo YB11 RB1 Ducati MHR Suzi GS650 |

SUCCESS!!!
Update, made up a tool from stainless steel tube and four 6mm bolts, it worked, got the case off with the engine in situ by removing the clutch basket and amazingly its not the sprag clutch its the idle gear between the starter pinion and the clutch gear. many teeth missing
Better still virtually no other damage.
Will now try to find part to complete repair.
Will post pics
New post started re track set up.
