Well having picked up the YB7 from Pompey earlier this year I went for a spin up the Yorkshire Dales. Plan was for a BBQ - well I got one of those Sad Sad Had trouble with photobucket uploading

cold- now I know what a "flat tank " bike is !

I know its a bit of a poor excuse to rebuild. Luckily we managed to get the tank/seat unit off and remove the airbox that was on fire big time. The tank then came off easy enough but the flames crossed from the bike to the tank and that was that - see picci 2.
Insurers sent the bike to 4th Dimension who called and said they would contact Bimota for new parts - hahahahahahaha. Obviously they have no idea about Bimotas. It was duly returned and I bought it back. Currently having an ally tank made, replacement carbs and K&Ns fitted and bike running. Bodywork to be redone in total as it was very scruffy.
Took the opportunity to totally rebuild it. Some muppet had pressure washed it and all the bearings etc were rusted and full of water! So a proper rebuild under way. Thanks to Lami for lending me his tank to use a model for the new one. Watch this space.
Toughest part was removing all the soot from the bike Sad

That really sucks mate. Lucky that you saved as much as you could though

Lucky I was on the SB4 and had the big hex key for the tank/seat cover or it would have been a goner. The new insulated ally tank will be better than the old one for sure Smile better than new when finished with some fresh paint on the fairing. Very Happy

What Nige is reluctant to point out is that it was his girlfriend that was riding it, on her Birthday...and she got stuck with the recovery truck taking it home whilst Nige continued his journey......Nice birthday Present Nige....and nice to see old fashions reversed in todays sexual equality days... so what caused it?

Never seen a bike catch on fire in the airbox before.
Have had plenty of intake backfires - even smoke from my old RG500.
The offroad guys often carry extinguishers which would have saved the day.

I'm sure NIge will chime in...but there was evidence of the battery earth lead arcing out on the frame...on these models theres a sharp edge on the battery box that the earth cable can chaff against over time wearing away the insulation...cut out needed to stop it happening...

Hello folks,

when I was working on a YB9SR a few years ago, the gasket for the fuel pump(?) plate in the bottom of the tank had perished and the petrol came out of the bottom of the tank almost as fast as it was going in. If the leak was slower it might not have been spoted until the engine was hot! So if your YB (and maybe other Bim) has been standing for a while, it's probably best to check for leakage before you ride,

Yes the banjo's and o-ring the fuel pump sits on are reliable enough but if someone does a dodgy or now that these bikes are 20 years old and parts are well used any leaks could be a drama like this.
I had the fuel low level unit leaking onto the alternator when i brought it but luckily it never caused a fire.

Just reading through this thread again and made me think... you're very brave going to the trouble of removing the fairing, tank etc to save your beloved bim. As much as i love my bikes i'm not sure i would hang around long if the fuel tank was on fire.

Hi Brian
Bike fully rebuilt with the exception of the fuel tank which is being made and the bodywork which is being repainted. I found a small part of the original paintwork which showed it to be one of the limited number white/gold and black striping/blue so a result there. A good clean of the engne, new fuel lines, K&N filters, it fired up first push Smile Pics to follow soon
