Yep, my arse end was certainly locked up! Thanks for the good wishes. It looks like I've found a motor already.

Great to see a Bimota out there, I raced at the PI Classics in 2013 I suppose we would have raced the same class P6? I was on a 86 GSXR750 that I had restored, an old ex-racebike that competed at the Daytona 200 in 87. If I had an older Bimota I would have definitely raced that there, what a fantastic place!

Cool. PI is a great track isn't it?. I only started on the Bimota this year.

Here is a video of the moment she died. I'd already started tipping it into Turn 1 so I was lucky to keep it upright.

Oops... for some reason i thought you were at Phillip Island. Still, you did a great job to stay upright.

Bud, I see you're running 8e/Furano fairing, with holes at the front to feed the holes in the frame that lead to the airbox, unlike original 8 fairing which has no holes in the fairing. What size jets are you using, assuming they're Mikuni and are you using original needles, if so which position is the clip? Have you got the paper filter in, or a K&N? I assume you're happy with the fuelling, if you're racing it? Sorry to hear about the engine blow-up. Any idea what caused it?

Good spotting Jonny. I've got the Furano fairing as it's the best raceglass I could find.

I run Keihin FCR41 flat slide carbs with the airbox and a simple pre-filter, so I can't help you with Mikuni jetting. My bike has (had Sad ) a pretty flat torque cuve from 6000-10500 RPM and nice fueling all the way through.

There is no EXUP on this bike so there is a lean hole at 4000RPM but this doesn't matter for a race bike.

Here is the main damage:

It looks like a rod bolt stretched, allowing the nut to come off. The big end then opened up over the crankpin and went flailing around.

I seem to recall from my youth that the Yamaha 1000 engines suffered Conrod failure if raced.

I don't know about a bolt stretching, the big end has got very very hot prior to letting go (look at the colour of the rod and cap). Doing wheelies with the forward facing pickup will starve the engine almost immediately and lead to catastrophe. Whatever the case, it looks like a lot of heat was generated before it let go.

Overfilling these engines with oil slightly (OW01 kit manual) helps a little. A rod that looks like this is almost always a spun bearing. Think about deepening and baffling the sump on the next one, and keep your oil levels up. Cheers,
Ralph

G'day Brian, it's going slowly slowly.

This is the YB8 as it currently sits. It's getting a few minor adlustments Rolling Eyes Smile

The rod had punched a hole through the crankcases and damaged the crank so I bought a replacement motor. I pulled the new motor down to give it a full rebuild. The cases needed a good clean.

Here are the cases after a session in my new sand blasting cabinet. They're ready for re-assembly. It's nice to have a clean base to work from.

I'm waiting on the bearing shells and then the bottom end can start going back together again.

In the meanwhile, I'm rebuilding my VFR400 motor after it spun a big end bearing and hope to have it ready for the PCRA Wakefield One Hour meeting in a month's time. I'm looking forward to teaming up with my 16 year old son for the first time. Australia is behind the rest of the world and in NSW it is very difficult for Juniors to road race and you pretty well have to be a Senior (16yo+) to road race.

I've been concentrating on the Period 6 250 class on my TZ250A reverse cylinder and the Period 5 250 class on my RD250LC in the PCRA Club Championships. I'm leading both classes at the moment with two more rounds to go. Cool

I'll try to keep you posted on the re-assembly of the YB8 if you're interested. I'm aiming to ride the Bimota next at the Island Classic in January again so I've got a fair bit of time.
