I've nearly got my YB8 ready for the Island Classic race meeting at Phillip Island next week.

Most things are done. I need to sort out a leak from the oil filter and fit the new bodywork. It's had a nice paint job on the raceglass so it's no longer pink. It should look real nice once it's together.

There is a separate race for the Period 6 (pre-1991) 750 and Unlimited bikes so that'll be interesting. It's a bit daunting as I've never raced a big bike before. I've mainly raced RDLCs, TZ250s and TZ350s. I have to learn not to slam it down through the gears when braking.

We'll see how it all goes next week.

Thanks guys. The bike is getting closer to being ready.

I fixed the oil leak. It was coming from the cylinder head cover and dripping onto the pipes. I didn't have a spare seal, so a bit of 3 bond will do for now.

It was a bit of a chore to get to the cover. Remove seat, move fuel tank, remove airbox, remove carbs, remove radiator, remover thermostat housing, remove metal water pipes, remove cylinder head cover. No, wait, the cover doesn't clear the frame. I had to lift the cover up as far as I could and apply the sealant to where I could reach. Good for now.

I fitted the Furano seat, which needed a bit of fiddling to make up the different front mount, fitted the Bimota stickers and race numbers, and made up and installed the seat pads.

The hugger and front guard were installed. It's starting to look like a complete bike again.

The fairing is off having a screen custom made. They are having difficulties making one. This is stressing me out, as I still need to install the fairing (always new brackets to be made for a different fairing) and an oil catch tray. Hopefully, I get it back Monday.

The throttle cable was starting to break, so I made up a new one.

Your bike is going to sweet mate. The engines in these bims are certainly not easy to work on. Not much can be done to the sb6 engine with out dropping the engine. Do you have a custom race electrical harness or have you just left the unnecessary gear disconnected?

I wish I lived a little closer as i'd love to slip down for the weekend. Hoping to ride down for the GP again this year.

Keep us up to date with your progress if you have time to post Wink

Cheers,
Brian

Hi Brian, I've still got the full overweight and complex wiring harness. I intend to replace this some time soon. I found a wiring diagram for a race kit YZF750SP that I am going to use to make up a minimalist loom.

Last week, I was tidying up the wiring and the bike wouldn't start. I found an earth wire had disconnected. It took me ages to find as it not shown on any wiring diagram. I would love a nice simple loom.

Yeah if it's going to be a track only bike that's the way i'd go too. There's a lot of wiring that's not necessary for the track... too many things to go wrong. Will save a bit of weight too and hours of trouble shooting for electrical problems.

The bike is even closer to being finished. It better be, because I'm leaving for the Island tomorrow.

I finally got my fairing back. The screen manufacturer couldn't successfully make a screen, so I had to make my own. A bit of 2mm Lexan, a few templates and voila, instant race screen.

There are still a few minor things to do in the morning, but it's coming together nicely.

You did a great job with the screen! It looks like a factory one. The tri-colour paint scheme looks fantastic. #27 eh... if you can get it around PI in any sort of fashion like him you'll do ok.

I hope you're loaded and just about on your way Laughing

Have a great weekend mate

It is not always easy to fiddling with a Bimota. Patience, there is always a solution. Wink
The bike looks fantastic. Nice work with the screen.
Good luck this weekend.

I'm back safe and sound from the Island Classic. The Bimota received plenty of attention as it looked so shit hot! Just about every passerby took a photo of it and a Retro bike mag is interested in doing an article on the bike soon.

Last weekend was a shakedown run for the bike as it was it's first race meeting. What a glorious bike to ride! It does everything well and no real glitches popped up.

I was slowly getting my head around riding a 1000cc bike after years of riding 2 stroke 250-350s and going faster each time out. I didn't want to end up like the 5 other bikes that crashed out on the first lap of the first P6 race.

I had a small problem with the oil leak continuing from the cylinder head cover which we fixed with some extra washers to compress the seal further. And the engine died in the last race when I must have bumped the kill switch in Siberia. The start relay is a bit dodgy. You need to flick the kill switch on/off a couple of times to get it to click, so I did that and away it went again. Bummer, as I was further up the field than normal. That relay has to go when I make up a new wiring loom.

So the YB8 is in pretty good shape for the next meeting in 2 weeks at Wakefield. That track is a lot tighter and I'm feeling more comfortable so I'm looking forward to it.
