Most of the pictures that I have seen of the DB5R have dry clutches, butt mine has a wet clutch. Does anyone know what the deal with this is?
I was under the impression that they used the Ducati Multistrada engine in these bikes, and it has a wet clutch. Did they just use whatever engine Ducati had a few extras of laying about? Like maybe M1100 Monster engines?
Or did Bimota spec the clutch, but wasn't to picky about what they received?
Inquiring mind wants to know! (BTW, I love the wet slipper clutch, it's quiet, smooth and works great) _________________ Spike C.

they used for the first part of DB5 production the 1000DS engine came from Multistrada.
When they passed on 1100DS they used the engine came from, as you wrote, Multistrada again.
Before Ducati EVO engine the passed to use the 1100DS of Hypermotard, so the return with the dry clutch. _________________ http://bcomebimota.blogspot.it/ |

Ok, so the 1k used dry, the first 11 used wet, then they switched back to the dry.
I guess I have a rare collectible then!
Butt why a dry clutch would be desirable is beyond me...... _________________ Spike C.

We are italian, we like sounds, noise, ecc... The Ducati fan like to hear cling cling of the dry clutch
Ducati ran for over 20 years with dry clutch, so have it the bike will be like more close to a race replica bike.
In my opinion I like the dry clutch, for the noise, for see it twist, for fast time during the change and so on. Yes, I kwon it is more strong, it will last less _________________ http://bcomebimota.blogspot.it/ |

As Spidermann says........they went to the 1100 cc motor (1079) when the cats were introduced for emissions.....and yes...its whatever engines Ducati had to sell to them in effect..........True that the wet clutches are smoother and quieter...and yes...Ducati fans like the rattly dry clutches...Only advantage really is they are easier to change the plates as evidently no need to drop the oil.....so servicing is easier......The last DB5R engines were from the Ducati hypermotard version with the magnesium engine casings....... |

Dry clutch;
Less weight ( less oil, enclosed case cover not needed )
Better cooling ( air vs oil cooled )
Faster / easier access for service and or inspection
less friction ( not bathed in oil / viscous = friction)
More power ( less loss of HP / to move through the oil )
No oil contamination ( unless the wet clutch has separate oil bath ....most share the same oil for clutch, trans and engine )
"looks " race
"sounds" race ( and makes more noise than wet )
Traditional ( for race ap )
The wet clutches have their own + / - too.....
I did a wet to dry clutch conversion on my Tesi 3D LE Me like

You can't put a trick CF carbon cover on a wet clutch as I found out with my DB9.

The deal is that the original DB5R had the motor from the Multistrada, with a wet clutch, and the later ones used the motor from the Hypermotard, which had a dry clutch.

Hiya - Any idea of the going price of 2010 DB5R up there - we are fairly isolated down here at the arse end of the world.....the guys here in SA wont pay what they do in europe or the states .youve seen pics of my bike,only 3700 km on the odometer and not a scratch on her anywhere,oz wheels ,zard pipes,Ohlinspaperwork all in order etc............any thoughts? many thanks _________________ Loveitalianbikes |

hi all ,,,,,,,,,,,,anyone able to decipher bimota serial numbers ..........heres mine for my DB5R.......I think the 08 is for the year of frame,and perhaps the last few digits - indictates which number off the line...15 out of 28 as I believe that only that number or thereabouts were made.anyone ,spike ?
