Well, Vort, the person from Progressive Ins. had ambiguous info about that totaled stuff, so I don't know how that will pan out. I will know more in a few days.
And 12bims, I neglected to mention to those I spoke to that the panels were painted! That should change things considerably! _________________ Spike C.

Spike.......I am sincerely saddened to read of your DB5 problems and I hope that you get them resolved. The cost of the parts would have me running for the hills! And I have no idea why they are so expensive. I have arranged for a custom (factory built) conversion to my DB9 utilizing new DB11 parts directly with the BIMOTA factory...all done before the UK had the new importers..... and the factory will supply, paint the Carbon fibre DB11 seat unit with seat pads and conversion brackets. The costs from the factory to me are running about 12-15% of the repair price quoted to you ....on one of your posts. Also...having looked at the Italian websites you can buy a db5 for 8000 euros and ship the whole thing to the US ...cheaper than the repair bill quoted.
Anyway....good luck and do not give up.... _________________ On an Island in the River Thames!

Thanks to all for the support. I am NOT going to give up on this bike!!
One friend of mine suggested removing all the bodywork and making a "Streetfighter" out of it! That would be a bit of a last resort, but food for thought.
I will know more by next Tuesday or Wednesday. Also, I noticed a DB5R on ebay in California. _________________ Spike C.

Insurance dude just finished evaluating the bike, and will prolly have a summation by Friday. I think it will be fairly close, butt who knows?
When my Ducati was backed into and ended up being totaled I found an exact replacement in Craigslist the next day, and it eventually ended up in my garage. Right after I went down on the DB5R I see that one on ebay! Alas, it was listed just a bit too soon to do me any good....... _________________ Spike C.

Is it like the UK and the insurance can WRITE OFF in various categories. We have D-A , D being cosmetic but not worth fixing ( for the insurance company with new parts ) but can be put back on the road, to A being absolutely fooked and can't even be sold as birs that could make it back onto the road .
If they do say it is a viable fix, will it have any sort of marker against it which could affect future sales value/insurance premiums ? |

As far as I know it is either totaled or not. A lot of "totaled" bikes are bought from the people who buy from the insurance company, and then fixed up to be licensed for the road again, whether the total was for cosmetics or a broken frame. Once it has been declaired a total it receives a branded title that indicates that it was reclaimed. Some if not all insurance companies will not write a comp and collision policy for such bikes, but I have not researched this to know for sure. By the time the guy from the company got through he came up with a repair bill of $14,460. My deductible is $1000. Now they have to find out what comparable bikes are worth, and what the knackers would pay for it. Finding comparables is going to be interesting, I suspect.
He said that he should have things wrapped up by the end of the week. _________________ Spike C.

My bike is not being totaled and they are letting me do the work on it myself!

That is good news Spike, as would be a shame for such a good bike to be totalled for cosmetic damage. On the bright side, will give you some time together over winter |

Hi Spike
Just read your post.
Sorry to hear.
Beyond the physical pain I can imagine how you feel.
I hope it all works out.

Thanks Vince, it is all working out better than I could have hoped! The insurance adjuster told me that they sent me a check today, so all I have to do is wait for Bimota to make the parts! They should be ready about the time my broken thumb heals! _________________ Spike C.

I've had it happen with a 1985 Harley. In that case, the return cable had broken inside the sheath. The bike has two cables: one to open and one to close. I've also had a sticking throttle with a '98 Ducati when the cable got extremely dry and there was a bit more slack in the cable than there should have been. It was really noticeable at low speed/low rpm when driving around town. Lubing and adjusting the cable cured it.
I am not familiar with the DB5Rs throttle arrangement, but look for cable issues or a return spring on the butterfly bracket if equipped with a return spring. _________________ Look for my books...

I just recieved a new slightly longer throttle cable so I'm hoping that it will prevent a reoccurrence! _________________ Spike C.
