Nice couple of Bimbos Laminator. Have you ever compared the tank-seat unit compatibility between the YB4 and the YB7...?
Also, you mentioned cam position sensor on the YB4? I would be interested in more information on that! Cheers |

Hi Who
Looking at them from the rear I can see that the YB7 is thinner than the YB4. Also the vents, etc are in different places. At first I thought they may be the same, but seeing them next to each other makes it easy to spot the differences. Also the chassis' are not the same, with the billet section (near the footpeg hangers) being different.
The YB4 has fuel injection. Over time the magnets in the sensors deteriorate. This caused the bike to completely cut-out when it got hot. Bimota have drilled and welded a bracket for the cam sensor onto the rocker cover, and added a pickup wheel onto the cam. Also there is a sensor and pickup on the crank. Apparently the YB4 measures and adjusts the mixture depending on revs, etc. I managed to get the sensors from a classic formula one car parts supplier!
Before I found out it was the sensors, I'd sent the ECU off to a specialist. When I rang them they asked what it was off. I told them it was a '88/89 Bimota motorbike. They didn't believe me and said 'not possible, this didn't come out until '91'. The bike has 1 owner from new in '88 and I know everything is original.

Cheers Laminator I'll keep the magnet issue in mind when I finally get around to giving my YB6 a run. Here's a photo of the old girl... A cousin of your YB4... A bit of a strange one actually...

Four of these were put together for the Japanese dealer, who I believe was one of the biggest in the world at the time. It is basically a Tuatara with injection, black motor etc.
Perhaps this is were the conjecture resides regarding how many Tuatara were built. Some say 60 others 56. This is one of the four japanese variants. It was delivered in these colours, and has about 4500k on the clock |

laminator... I'm loathed to make suggestions, however, that motul sticker on the frame, unless it's hiding a scratch or something is going to cause a dark patch in the frame anodising over time.
Anodising dyes are organic, and noticeably affected by UV. So over time you will end up with the section under the sticker being darker than the rest of it.... |

It's probably too late to remove it now, it's been there for 22 years It's always been run on Motul Racing oil, I like the smell. The dunlop sticker was put on for a free set of tyres to do 'The Ring'
I fixed the wiring on the reserve solenoid on the YB7 last weekend. While I'd got my bikes together I made a ittle video. I'd guess the exhausts won't be to everyones taste

Love to hear them running and in good health
in relation to the stickers, you could always remove them and then mask off the rest of the bike and give the spots a bit of sun...
Next time you have both seat units off, could you try putting the YB7 onto the YB6? |

nice fleet of old Yams you have there
not sure why you are worried about the exhausts - they all look and sound fine to me.
At Uttoxeter, we'll warm them up thoroughly before redlining them............. |

I'll have them both together at the weekend, the FZR is keeping the YB4 company at present. I'll get a tape and measure the mounting points at the back. I think the rear mounts are in a different position.

I'd best do an oil change and get some nice smelly motul in the YB7 then. But...I don't rev the engines too much without load on them
I balanced the carbs on the YB7 last weekend. #3 & 4 were very low, compared to #1 & 2. I adjusted the balance screw and levelled them out.
My old man was in the UK last weekend so we went out for a ride on the two Bims.

Quick update -
YB4EI - no worries, running like a dream. I rode it to Cadwell and back (160miles) two weeks ago. Getting ready for a new rear tyre now.
YB7 - Has been running great. I fitted a new chain and brake pads last week (the old chain would move sideways as much as it did up and down). Last time out I had a bit of trouble starting it without the choke, and running a bit rough at low revs. I noticed a slight ticking sound coming from near the top yoke. After removing the fairing and airbox I traced the fault to one of the coils. The insulation has broken down on the end and it's tracking down to the mounting bracket. Two new coils arrived today so hopefully I'll be fitting them tonight.
YB9 SR - Being picked up from Italy on thursday, should be with me by next thursday at the latest, woohoo!
Here's all three bikes I currently own. (The FZR400 2TK has had the mirrors sprayed, new tyres, new pads, new clutch and other bits since the photo)
