Now that I'm a bonafied tribe member with last year's acquisition of the YB10, I am doubling up on the Bimota with a deposit on an SB8R. Bike has 6500 miles, overall in excellent condition. Comes from a collection, but the owner rode it about once a month. It's only flaw is minor oil seepage around the lower back of the right case. Seller, who is not the original owner, is saying its normal for few drops of oil to come out of the breezer (?) during a ride after it's been sitting for a while. Is there anything else I need to look for? How is the reliability of these? Can the suspension be adjusted for height? It's a pretty tall bike

Thank you Brian. While the YB10 was a logical acquisition, the SB8R was more of the spur of the moment. Me and a friend looked it over - all carbon is in grea shape, nary a scratch. The right lower fairing has a small crack around one of the screws - not a real issue. Anything else to look for?

I don't know specifics about the sb8r, there are a couple on here though. Just the normal stuff you'd look for I guess. As far as I know the twin Suzi is a pretty strong engine

It has the aftermarket Arrow cans in carbon fiber. Once the seller started the bike I knew I was in deep trouble Shocked

It will a power commander to sort out the fuelling, you'd need to this even on a standard bike. There was a thread on here when an owner changed the injectors for a newer type for better fuel atomisation which would be a good mod.
All Bimota's need their suspension set up, if you're small then you're probably light too so the suspension will be softer (relatively) and the bike will sit a little lower. After that any bike can have the dog bones changed and the forks dropped through the yokes but it might compromise the ultimate lean angle in a corner.

Crankcase "breather" is what the bloke will be talking about.....an open valve and tube normally on the top of the crankcase to expel gases....

The SB8R should be fitted with an Ohlins rear shock with remote adjuster reservoir.....yellow spring...and on the bottom of the shock should be a blue anodised and silver locking rings adjusters for ride height....basically they adjust the length of the shock by winding the lock nuts clockwise down...then tightening up with the locking ring

Very Happy Shocked

Oh yes they do sound nice.

As said by others, engine is strong so should be OK. Only done about 800miles on my SB8K but never had it ' breath any oil ' although not uncommon for big twins to do this.

Fuelling on the R is mean't to be rough low to midrange , is all tuned for top end and those big 59mm throttles , power commander mean't to help but does not cure , or so I have been told by SB8R owners.

Suspension is tunable every way you want but start from a known value and do one thing at a time otherwise you will get completely lost . Paioli USD forks are on the firm side though , so depending on your size a change in spring might be in order. Bike as set hard as standard.

That's exactly what the seller was talking about. I didn't see any oil dripping myself. The seller told me after he test rode the bike - the seller has acquired this collection from an old dude and is not the original owner. I just saw what looked like seepage or blow by, something you may expect from a breather.

The seller is a local high end bike builder. He called me yesterday to tell me that so far he hasn't found the leak but recommended that the front caliper be rebuilt because it was a bit sticky. It's an ISR unit and he uses those units on the bikes he builds. He will also continue to look for any possible areas that will need attention. As such I'm expecting to have the bike by next weekend, pictures to come.

Thanks to all for the great info. Will update.

You are right on all counts except that I am not light. [/url]

Just got an update that the front caliper has been rebuilt and the rear brake adjusted. There were several seals needing replacement, the message didnt specify exactly which. The bike should be ready to roll this Thursday.

The real cost of all this self gratification? I am in the dog house with the Queen Bee, and my 1990 BMW R100 GS became the sacrificial lamb Sad Its up for sale. Hope it sells quickly - I don't like the prospect of spending nights on the cold garage floor.... Rolling Eyes

I guess there's a silver lining to everything. I love being in a company of optimists. Wifey said the new floor is going into the kitchen first, along with a complete redo... In reality she should be grateful to a Bimota for negotiating a remodel
