I've put a deposit on an SB8R. It's a 2000 with 6k miles. Ridden sparingly but on rather regular basis.

While looking the bike over, noticed a possible oil leak. Seller thought it came from a breather as the bike was ridden short distances once a month. Seller agreed to sort the leak. Yesterday the seller let me know that he is still having problems with resolving the leak issue.

I found that leaking oil is one of the very few concerns of the TL 1000R. Common cause appears to be a clutch pushrod seal. The case bolts also vibrate themselves loose.

Im perplexed by a fact that the seller is having diffiuculty resolving an oil leak issue on what otherwise sounds like a bullet proof drive train. My Dieci is 10 years senior with slightly less miles and no leaky. Did Yamaha do a superior job on sealing their motors?

Any other ideas what the cause may be?

I've got over 8K miles on mine and don't have any leaks whatsoever. The breather hose going into the bottom of the air box, if not sealed correctly will weep a little oil, but not enough to cause a substantial leak. Just enough to get things a little wet around the connection.

I am a bearer of good news. Visited the bike, the leaks have been sourced and eliminated. One culprit was the counter balance shaft seal. The other was the plastic case cover on the right side. Apparently it shrunk somewhat due to heat - stupid design. Seller removed and resealed the cover, tightened the bolts, leak gone. He said I should eventually replace it, but it shouldn't leak anymore. Both issues are known in the TL world. Seller checked the clutch pushrod seal but it's good and he doesn't want to touch it - if it ain't broke and all that jazz. I should be receiving the bike some time this week.

My neighbors, at least on one side, are partiers so I doubt I'll have trouble with them. I should be ok as long as I don't try to start my bikes at 4 in the morning. Removing baffles will not impact my neighbors as much as it will attract unwelcome attention from law enforcement. Although there is no law governing the decibels from a motorcycle exhaust and the Harleys are the loudest offenders, the cops are always on the lookout for sport bikes with loud pipes Evil or Very Mad

Still cant get the "harley" thing....if its a nice day lots of them turn up at my local meet...but only if its a nice day...and sure...they are always the loudest thing there....but its just loud...not engine loud...or nice loud...or even a rhtyhm or any such...just ruddy loud and annoying...nothing sweet about the sound at all.....could achieve the same with a Ford Fiesta by sawing off the exhaust pipe at the manifold..........Rant over... Laughing

They are getting the sensation alright, but I dont think its that of speed Laughing
Lets put it this way, I see far more female Harley riders than I do girls on sport bikes Wink Wink

A dig at Harley riders...and a sexist comment?? Hopefully your Mrs doesnt read the Forum to see what youre up to........I put the interest for ladies as down to the relatively low seat height of Harleys....intended for low slung Big Burger Boys but I suppose females may benefit also....

Very nice
Looks like sb8rs rearsets but in silver, interesting.
Please note bushes are harder than the foot peg, I have had to have mine machined to put softer bushes in.
Can you find out from the previous owner if he retro fitted these and if he did where did he source?
Thanks in advance.
