Hi Guys,
Hi-Res

after years of searching for the right SB6 to pup up during a time where I have some change to spend on one. I finally found one.
It is a SB6 MK1 from 1994 with an MK2 frame. I think it’s a factory frame swap as the Frame has a 1994 registration plate.
The bad bits:
• It went down on the racetrack once with frame protectors, the faring was partially repainted with original paint, the job is done really good as I could not have told if the pre-owner did not point that out.
• The frame has marks that the frame protector caused, they are not even scratches but the coating went off and the alloy oxidized , so it looks scratched. Thanks to Evilchicken0 I might get a set of Carbone frame protectors made from “P3”
• Tyres from 2003
• The carburetor was terribly set and dirty. Undrivable below 5000rpm
The good bits:
• Keihin FCR 41 flatslide carburetor
• Kainzinger exhaust manifold
• Second accelerator pump and Jets installed by Kainzinger (done 2003 for over 3000€)
• The pre-owner milled many parts out of alloy and made some from carbon to improve poor Italian engineering
o access to the “boot” is shut
o tank venting plastic now alloy
o carbone/alloy tank cap with venting
o milled construction to cut fuel from the carburetor for winter
o carbone headlight replacement for racetrack
o carbone mirror replacement for racetrack
o custom alloy cockpit for racetrack https://i.imgur.com/hau6dRv.png
o recently done valve game adjustment
o All the original parts such as carburetor where included as well as a set of paint and replacement headlights and Suzuki instruments as spare
• Super cheap price of 4100€ , I did not dare to bargain a cent as the pre-owner was super nice and honest and how much can a carburetor cleaning and readjusting cost…
Additional stuff I got from the pre-owner for 400€
Brembo 19x20 brake with spare handle (as new)
Set of Spiegler 8 cylinder brake calipers with spare brakepads (as new) (people on the internet think this is overkill and less good then the original)
Fancy motorcycle stand to lift the front up from under the “chin”
The carburetor cleaning and readjusting from Kainzinger + Suspension maintenance
Fuck me! 3070€
+Tires and TÜV (MOT) to a total of 3750€
The job is well done imo and Mr. Kainzinger is a friendly guy but he was supposed to check the Motorcycle and make me an estimate for what the carbs would cost and check if the suspension needs tuning. Instead of an offer I got a bill that blew my mind, but at least it drives well. Well, not sensationally well, but that’s to be fixed with time and money to come.
Dyno WHP
This Dyno is known to produce pessimistic figures, and I care for smoothness more than max hp, so I’m good for now.
Hear the old Dyno from 2003, this is BHP [I think it is whp+11%]
Tires
This might be of interest to others on the Board, I have Bridgestone S21 120/70 front and 190 /[55*] rear, they fit really good and ride amazing even if cold. I have been warned they can get slippery on the track if it is hot and you ride like a pro [* think it was 55, will check]
Spare Fairing from eBay
After Spending a fortune one the Mechanik, I saw a spare MK2 fairing show up on eBay from Austria, with shipping and Headlights 675€
The Rear is in ok condition with a sticker covering up some damaged paint and a few small marks from belts etc. The front is Shit, who in their right mind would do such a terrible paint job on a Bimota fairing. Good thing I got some Original paint left, but maybe I’ll do something funny with it as it is a spare set anyway. pict to come
Questions (ongoing list):
• The floating front brakes have a lot of play in radial(ca. 2mm) and axial(ca. >5+mm) direction. I have been tooled that this might be normal depending on brand. When braking I can sometimes hear and feel a “rattle” when braking in very low speed. Has not happened at higher speed.
• The mechanic told me the steering damper is not adjustable at a low enough setting in his opinion, is there a replacement damper like öhlines etc that fits plug and play?
• The SB6R has footguards at its footrests, on the SB6 I push the rear break cylinder with my right heel or touch the chain with my left heel. Is there a kit available that fits the SB6? If not an I get lucky and find SB6R guards, will they fit the SB6?[/b]
Many thanks for the years of good reading

Take the steering damper off - they don't really need it.
The brake discs are a bit more worrying - there should be minimal radial play >1mm. It could be the bobbins are worn and need replacing or it might be the disk carriers.
Check this old thread - the website is still selling the bobbins referred to http://www.bimotaforum.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=903&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=bobbins&start=15
Tyres - 190 rear ? - original was a 180/55 but it could be the profiles are close once on the wheel
Foot guard (heel guard) there was an aftermarket guard for the rear brake master - again ask if P3 have a mould for it. _________________ Don't read everything you believe |

If you want to change the original, solid MK1 footrests (they snap the frame mountings in an accident), you can get later MK2 SB6 or SB6R versions from here:-

Nice. Looks like a Mark 2 frame? _________________ '99 DB4 #104, '96 SB6 #1165, '94 DB2 J #652, '99 DB4 #088, '08 VTX1800, '93 ZXR750R M1, '95 ZXR750, '95 ZXR750 Race Bike, '94 CBR400rr NC29 Race Bike, '94 CB250, '49 BSA C10 250, '61 BSA A10 650, '89 ZXR750, '91 Ducati 851 |

Thanks for the many Info’s,
@brian
The frame is an MK2 Frame, I assume it is a factory replacement, but I have no documentation of that.
@ Evilchicken0
I'll try replacing the bobbins, but I am confused as to what I need.
Do I need 2x the Set on www.motobins.co.uk + 100pcs Black Metal Wavy Wave Crinkle Spring Washers 14mm x 21mm x 0.3mm or bobbins from BlackshadowUK
Why is the steering damper not necessary on an SB6, how can that be necessary on one bike and not the other? I have a cbr900rr without a damper and was lucky on a few wobbles in the past.
[Off topic] I have always wondered why the steering damper must be set to a low setting. All I have ever found out is that a too hard damper can have a negative effects on riding Can someone pleas elaborate what negative effect that is and how to tell if the damper is set to hard or not hard enough?
@GeeKay
Can’t find the footrests there. Are there other aftermarket alternatives? |

I remember reading a thread on here a few years ago about Mk1 and Mk2 SB6’s, and there was some discussion about some SB6’s that had a mixture of Mk1 & Mk2 parts on them. _________________ '99 DB4 #104, '96 SB6 #1165, '94 DB2 J #652, '99 DB4 #088, '08 VTX1800, '93 ZXR750R M1, '95 ZXR750, '95 ZXR750 Race Bike, '94 CBR400rr NC29 Race Bike, '94 CB250, '49 BSA C10 250, '61 BSA A10 650, '89 ZXR750, '91 Ducati 851 |

That’s just the plate, is there any difference between Mk1 and MK2 plates? Don’t see the advantage of replacing that bit. |

Go the bobbins website - the kit comes as part number 20393 - put the number in the search.
If the steering damper is on the lowest setting its not really doing anything - The SB6 is a fairly stable bike and doesn't shake it's head.

The solid footrest plate on your bike is very strong. if you drop the bike the plate will not deflect and the weakest part is the threaded lug on the frame , so it snaps off.
If you put the later thin armed footrest plates on and drop the bike, chances are you will just bend the plate , not snap the lug off the frame. |

I see, thanks for that info, i thought the later models had up-folding foot-pegs that would fold away in an crash.
Regardless, the linked set comes at 650€, I think I would rather spend that towards a replacement frame if needed one.
BTW my VIN is 0104 |

Folding footpegs went on bikes to certain markets... Roger,
I'm interested to know if whoever installed the FCR41's had to modify the frame? The float bowls of FCR's are to big and fowl on the frame cross brace. _________________ '99 DB4 #104, '96 SB6 #1165, '94 DB2 J #652, '99 DB4 #088, '08 VTX1800, '93 ZXR750R M1, '95 ZXR750, '95 ZXR750 Race Bike, '94 CBR400rr NC29 Race Bike, '94 CB250, '49 BSA C10 250, '61 BSA A10 650, '89 ZXR750, '91 Ducati 851 |
