Hello fellow BIMOTA lovers.

I have been fortunate enough to acquire what I consider the HOLY GRAIL of BIMOTA, a BRAND NEW 1979 SB2! (one of the first 50 produced for Suzuki Italia)

Never registered, and never started, it has sat for the past 38 years in the same place in Italy, since being delivered from Rimini, unmolested.

I believe it to be the only BRAND NEW SB2 extant.

I will start a thread in the SB forum, but wanted others to know in case they might be interested in learning about her.

I have another SB2 that I plan on restoring using this SB2 as the Reference Standard.

Cheers!

Nice ... but it's a collectors bike rather than something to ride

Congrats on the purchase! Great piece of history there. A shame it will never be ridden but at least you have another one to ride.

I'd love to see some pics

As I said, I'll start a thread in the SB section of this forum shortly, but thought I would share a photo here to entice you to view the other thread....

Cheers!

The wheels are SPEEDLINE.

I haven't measured the wheels yet, but per the original documentation (MOTOCICLO - MOTOCARROZZETTA) I received with the bike, the "Pneumatici" are:

anteriori 3.50 x H-18
posteriori 130/80 x H-18

Cheers,
Steve

Hello Steve,

I have an SB2 too albeit not NOS like yours. I think you might have the only NOS SB2 in the world. Will you be riding it?
My bike was bought as an abandoned project. Chassis and cycleparts done, Engine fitted but wiring, bodywork and overal assembly and detailing still to be done. Lots of work!
As Your bike was never repainted can you tell me this: Are the thin red and black lines separating the big colored areas hand pinstriped like I see on my old SB2 fairing or are those lines carefully masked and spray painted like the lines on the fairing of the YB4 I once owned?
Cheers,
William

William,
I will take photos of the pin stripping this evening and post them here when I get home. I believe they are hand pin stripped, but will confirm for you.

Evilchicken - I do need to tend to those baseboards someday!

Cheers,
Steve

William,
I looked over the pinstriping on the SB2 fairings the other night. I expected to see bristle marks in the black pinstriping, but didn't, so I had to break out the magnifying glass and go over the fairings like Sherlock Holmes!

Upon very close inspection I believe I found evidence that it was hand pinstriped.

The pinstriper followed the masking line (raised line of paint seen in the images) between the two colors fairly well, although there are areas where its a little wavey.

The telltale marks were as follows:

1.) At some of the starting points, where you can see the bristle marks of the brush starting to lay down the paint.

2.) Transitions in the bodywork where the pinstriping narrows due to the angle that the brush is required to take.

3.) Lines down the length of the bike, where the pinstriper needed to lift his brush, presumably to get more paint, and then resume laying down the pinstripe.

I hope these help with your restoration. If you need any more information please let me know. I have a second SB2 that I will be restoring soon, and documenting on the SB forum of this site.

Cheers,
Steve

Hello Steve,

Thank you very much for the detailed proof that hand applied pin striping is original for the SB2 series. I hope you are not offended if I say it is a rather poor finish. My old and battered fairing shows the same hand drawn striping and I was hoping it was part of the respray done during an economical restoration somewere in the past. Now it seems from the pictures you made that it is actually the factory finish! I think it might be difficult not to improve on it during a restoration if you want to retain the real 70's factory look. Fortunately Bimota later changed to a more proffesional finish as the 1988 YB4 I once owned had perfectly masked black lines lying deeper than the rest of the paint. Not even that difficult to do. First apply black paint more less were you want to have the lines. Then cover the requisted area with 5mm wide masking tape and then apply the white, gold and red. Remove masking tape and voila, black lines, perfect width and complimenting a 40.000Dm asking price.
My SB2 fairing lacks the logo's so I'm not able so tell but are the SB2's Suzuki and Bimota decals sitting on top of the paint or are they protected by clearcoat?
Very kind regards and thanks again for helping out.

William
