Well, i rode the YB down to get a RWC (MOT) the rain was torrential, i don't think the bike had ever been ridden in the rain.

During the test, the rear brake light wasn't working so i needed to go sort that out, it was working when i started it in the morning... Sorted the problem to the connector for the rear lights. Rode back to the mechanic, while i waited with the bike on the side stand and keys out, the bike started turning over and trying to start!! Luckily it was in neutral, or it would have fallen over! I quickly jumped on it and tried everything i knew to stop it... nothing i could do, and to get to the battery terminals was going to take a fair while... So i turned all the lights on and put it in gear and released the clutch a few times, luckily the battery was in a pretty poor state, so it wasn't to long before the battery died.

Here are the ugly pics...

Struth! That's worse than I imagined Steve. Still could have been a lot worse had you not found it before it caught fire Shocked

Yikes, sad looking photos, your lucky it didnt turn out worse, thats hope you get it back on the road soon. Might be a good opportunity to make your own loom to replace and simplify the old. Your yb is probably similar to my hb3 in that bimota used the donor bikes loom on a smaller bike resulting in a large loom being squashed and contorted to fit into a smaller space, resulting in stress points on an old loom and possible shorts and other electrical gremlins.
l made my loom run down under the tank, and used more modern thin walled wiring,

Sheez! A bike with a mind of its own. Lucky it didn't catch fire or even fall over.

It'll be quite a job replacing that loom. As Waggy said, Bimota use the donor bike loom, in this case FJ1100. They then modify it for their own bits and pieces so it ends up a bit of everything.

I'd try a patch up for now with the replacement being a longer term project. It's gotta be ready for March 24 Wink

Hi Waggy,

yup i was very lucky....

Your HB is stunning congratulations. I'll have to go and thoroughly read your thread Smile

I'm going to spend a couple of hours on it this morning, the plan is to make it safe and put it back together. I'd love to do a custom loom but i don't have the knowledge or skills, looking at the loom there are many bad decisions by Bimota, for example the ignition module is installed upside down, allowing for water ingress.

Hi Bud,

i need to patch it simply to get it registered, i only have a week or two before i'll need another RWC, so i'm hoping to get it back together today or tomorrow and get it presented to the club for club reg.

I do want it going for March, i wanted to get the SB6 running as well, but that might have to just get a wash and not do the parade lap...

For what it's worth, i agree, patch it up for now. If your plan is to have this bike in top condition it might be worth getting someone who specializes in making wiring looms custom make you a complete new loom. it would definately be a lot simpler and neater than the (Bimota) hacked up FJ loom.

Just the carbs, it leaked all the fuel out of the tank about 18 months ago, and it has just sat at a mates place untouched.

I'll get it out and give it a scrub, but i think the carbs will be beyond me before the event.

I fitted new eBay mirrors today...

I'm not sure, but they will do for now.. I need indicators, and this is the quickest easiest way

How have you guys with the electrical through the frame resolved new indicators.

It was a while ago but I cut LED indicators into my mirrors on the SB6. To made small jump cables up to them and put those onto the original connectors, all you need is some crimps on them. I use proper uninsulated bullet connectors with the clear pvc sleeves. I drilled the fairing just below the mirrors with a hole big enough to get the male and a wire through, you get the female through it because the other wire isn't there (hope that makes sense). If you don't want to drill the fairing just make the jumps a bit longer and put them around the fairing. Attach the wires to the mirror stays with Velcro cable ties

Well, i thought today was going to be a good day, i set about fixing the loom, myself and a very skilled mate, sat down and we stripped, cleaned, soldered and heatshrinked our way through all the electrical carnage, i also purchased some of that spiral wiring loom wrap to add another layer of protection.

i remounted the the ignitor the correct way so it wouldn't fill with water then started putting the bike back together. About 3pm i hit the starter and was welcomed by the sound of a starter motor, then a running engine... happy days... for about 3 seconds when i realised i had no Tacho, nuetral light, fuel gauge, brake lights and indicators!!!!

I removed the top fairing and rechecked fuses and connections, everything was solid... I have no idea now where to go, either when the wiring shorted it has damaged other components or when we were trying to sort out the burned wires we incorrectly joined something! It's weird as the headlights, dash lights, high beam and high beam indicator all work...

So in disgust, i disconnected the negative terminal, put the bike back together so i can proceed with the club reg, then get it back home and figure out a plan of attack!

Bloody wiring....

That sounds like a circuit. If it was an earth I'd expect the bits to work but only just, so I'd look at the live feed and because it's a group of things just trace where all that splits off.
Easy enough to test for the earth just attach a wire from one of those components to the frame.

Is it just me thinking why was there a great bunch of coupled wires at that point anyway, ....all thiose spliced connections! Doesn't look original so wonder if there was some chafing and wear that necessitated it in the first place. Sorry that doesn't help but just thinking you don't want to duplicate the original problem?

The bunch of spliced wires maybe the result of Bimota making the donor wiring harness fit the smaller frame and different application?
