Looks like there was a larger current draw than the wires could handle, check the headlamp bulb hasn't got an 80 or 100w bulb without a relay

Steve, I agree with EC... probably something simple with this issue. Maybe a bad or misplaced earth wire or a bad connection for that circuit (group of components).

Go back over the work that you've done and double check wire colours etc. Check earths. Anything else that you may have disconnected during the work?

After looking at the problem, my thoughts are the copper clamp joining all the wires together was unfortunately right next to the rear engine mount bolt, there are numerous joins like this in the loom and as Brian said, i believe they are factory. Over time the clamps edge has worn through the insulation and started shorting on the frame....

I have a very busy couple of weeks coming up, so i'm just going to get the registration sorted and leave it sitting in the shed, then i'll have to decide if i try and fix it before the Festival of Speed event or take up 2 non running Bimotas!

Might be a quicker fix to get the SB6 going? Doesn't take long to clean the carbs once the bodywork is off. Still, it all does take time and if you are short of spare time might be best to just leave it together.

I'll have 2 running Bims Rolling Eyes , a rarity indeed Laughing

Sorry to hear about your YB5,
maybe it didn't like being moved out of NSW.

The offer is still open if the bike is giving you the shits

It's frustrating, but there is no way it's leaving....

It is a stunning bike, just a pity about this electrical problem, it will be sorted and i will spend many years enjoying it Smile

Well, i have had a great morning, i went and visited Rex Wolfenden of T-Rex Racing, the mastermind behind the racing Bimota YB5 that debuted last Year at Eastern Creek Festival of Speed and won the event overall and set a new lap record doing it.

What an absolute legend, we spent time talking about the good old days when bikes were bikes, i got to have a good look at the race bike, but the best thing was i got to buy all the old road gear from it, so wiring loom Smile fuel tank, battery box, triple clamps, clip ons, switch gear, carbies, mufflers, mirrors, airbox, and other assorted rare Bimota bits and pieces.

Now all i need is to find a garage/shed i can use to srip the bike again and fit the wiring loom, at least it should now be ready for Eastern Creek in March.

Here is a pic of his bike on debut at Eastern Creek last year, frame 198.

Great score Steve! I saw that Rex was selling off some bits so I'm glad you got them. I hope you can get the loom fitted soon. InterFoS will be here before you know it.

Rex is a great guy and he builds such a nice bike.

Lovely bike huh.
In some ways it might benefit Bimota to make the frame and road gear again and sell it as a kit

Well today didn't go as planned, i was thinking i'd just pop the loom from the T-rex bike into mine and i'd be up and running today.... not quite..

It is a very complex thing, trying to fit a 30 year old wiring loom inot another frame, i started at the difficult end, the headstock, and worked my way back.

I was pretty happy with the routing of the loom around the frame, so moved onto the fusebox and swingarm area. All was going well until i discovered my old loom had a relay that the new loom doesn't have.... This bike is testing me...

Anyone know what it's for, it is an Omron 4U8-01 on a blue plug??? There is an unpopulated white 6 pin plug that has nothing to plug into, so i'm thinking it must be for the tail light, but yet again the 2 looms are different, the sex of the plugs on the main loom are opposite.... give me strength..

A quick Google search for that exact relay and code. Lists it as a Sidestrand switch...with a further search on a yamaha xs650 forum saying same relay was also a Sidestrand switch....often bimota wiring looms are from the donor bike engine. And often you have cable ends on bimota connecting to nothing....all my early bimotas never came with a Sidestrand switch...because bimota used their own heavy chrome Sidestrand. That was an auto retract suicide stand.....so no switch was needed.....Db1 and Db2 from 1986 and 1994....both suicide stands.... Auto retract and no switches... Whereas the donor ducati bikes had ducati Sidestrand, black painted steel...not suicide stands...and they had the safety cut out switch, relay, etc to cut the engine if you put it into gear without flicking up the stand...what sidestand is on your bike??

Hi Steve,

what are we going to do without you...

I did a quick search and found less than 1 page of results referring to XS650 but nothing for FJ, with someone saying it was a relay and someone else saying it was a diode rectifier...

Today will be a better day, it is raining so the plan is to go to the garage clean up a work area and strip the bike again and look at it all with fresh eyes...

I stripped back some of the original loom and the switch/relay/rectifier was definitely factory and the new loom doesn't have it and it ran on the other YB5.

Mine has the suicide stand, it is the most dangerous stand i have used, it makes the SB6 stand feel like NASA developed it!!! Smile

Today has been a little more productive, i have simply decided not to worry about the connectors that have nothing to connect too. I double checked everything and carefully connected up the battery, no smoke so that was a good start.

I put the key in and turned the ignition on and right away the Neutral light came on.. Smiley The clock worked, it turned the lights on, yup all worked, so it was time to hit the starter...

She turned over but wouldn't start, there was fuel at the filters but it wouldn't start... Now, this just might be the carbs, as i fitted the carbs from the T-rex race bike as Rex told me he had it running and put it on his dyno before he stripped it for racing and they ran beautifully, where as mine were running very rich...

So i decided to get creative... I removed the fuel tank and sprayed small amounts of fuel into the carbs and hit the button, it stumbled but caught, it idled for a few seconds so the good news is that it sounds like i'm close to buttoning her back together.

After the excitement of her running the last thing to do was to check the 6 pin connector that i thought is for the tail lights.. So out with the trusty multi-meter and yes, lights, brake and indicators all identified. So all i need to do is modify the loom to suit the waterproof connector i have fitted to the lights and we're done..

I do like the access now that the airbox is out, the fj1200 airbox is almost impossible to access, to change the filter you have to remove the airbox, i think i'll buy some filter pods as this will allow me to re locate the rear brake fluid reservoir which will make removing the battery box much easier...
